Shepparton News

Shepparton must bounce back from one of the upsets of the year if it is to defend its hold on second place against Shepparton United in women's Goulburn North East Football Association on Sunday.

The Reds became the first team ever to lose to Kyabram's women last week as its young team went down 2-0 to the Go-Annas.

Defeat left the door open for Shepparton to lose its hold on a qualifying final berth as its second loss of the season kept it on 24 points, ahead of Shepparton United on 22.

Shepparton turned to a host of its junior girls players to step up last weekend and play Kyabram as Hale Tanrikulu, Victoria Prinzi, Meg Anderson and Isobel Cook all got game time in the absence of older players.

The upside for Shepparton this weekend is that a win will move it back to the top of the ladder, as Shepparton South has the bye.

But United has form on the board after beating Shepparton 3-0 at Rumbalara earlier in the season and coming into the match off the back of a 4-1 win against ladder-leading Shepparton South.

The Blues' Leanne Rawson remains the player to stop after her double at the weekend, she also scored two goals in United's last meeting with Shepparton.

Another positive for the Blues was Chelsea Beer's first goal of the season last week, the 16-year-old forward joined United at the start of the year after coming through the ranks in Shepparton Junior Soccer Association.

At Barooga Recreation Reserve, visitor Benalla will welcome back Victoria under-15 representative Aimi Delahaye for its match against Cobram Victory.

Delahaye plays as an outfielder for Benalla even though her selection for the state team was as a goalkeeper.

The Rovers have suffered a recent dip in form, dropping to fifth on the ladder, two points behind fourth-placed Tatura.

Rovers coach Peter Gebauer said his team would again be without its Women's Premier League players including top scorer Lizzie Mason, but he would be ringing the changes on the park to try and find a goal scorer in her absence.

In the weekend's other matches, Tatura hosts Numurkah and Kyabram plays Cobram.
