Shepparton News

Cards did the talking for Shepparton and Shepparton United on Sunday as the two arch rivals cooled their jets in a red and yellow mess at Central Park.

Shepparton proved itself too quick and clinical for United and eased to a 5-2 win in a match all but decided before half-time by two red cards to the Blues.

But the sendings-off were not to take away from a Shepparton performance that established the Reds as the competition's clear top contender in the chase of ladder-leader Shepparton South.

Shepparton is second on the ladder with 21 points, behind Shepparton South on 28, which also has a game in hand and ahead of Tatura on 20 points in third.

Shepparton United conceded a pair of first half penalties, both converted by Andy Rushbury, with defenders Matt Stables and Jimmy Avram seeing red before half-time.Stables was sent off for a second yellow card, while Avram's challenge on Rushbury was a straight sending off.

Shepparton still needed Jarrod Moore to save free kicks from Roven Shaholli and Fahed Alghazaly to stay ahead of the game and was issued a warning when an unmarked Justin Kalafatis started the second half by pegging back a goal.

Shepparton responded with a goal from David Davkovski after he ran on to a cut-back from Andy Ingham, then Rushbury rounded out his hat-trick with a goal for 4-1.

Matt Georgiou pegged a goal back again for United when his long shot was deflected in by Johnny Davkovski, but United was unable to manufacture a chance to pull within one goal.

Substitute Papi Mukasa sealed the game with a late lob over United goalkeeper Joey Perkovic for 5-2.

Both teams eased off significantly in the second half due to the number of cards handed out, Shepparton left the field with two yellows and United four on top of its two red cards.

United now must play catch-up if it is to make the top four.

The Blues sit in sixth place with 15 points, behind fourth-placed Cobram Victory and fifth-placed Cobram on 16 points with both teams having a game in hand.
