Reds rush to beat injuries

Shepparton's status as the dominant force of North Eastern Soccer League faces just one more challenge at Tatura Park on Sunday as the Reds chase a 14th premiership.

But injury clouds hanging over key Shepparton players will see some of its stars in a race against time to play against Cobram Victory in the men's division one grand final.

One more win will see Shepparton claim not just the flag, but the unique record of having won back-to-back premierships or better on five occasions.

Although coming through a tough preliminary final last week 2-1 against Shepparton United, the Reds won the premiership last season by taking an equally tough path against Hanwood.

History is on Shepparton's side, too; there have been more back-to-back winners than one-off premiers.

United Kingdom import Sam Smith has received extensive treatment this week on an ankle injury sustained in the preliminary final.

While Smith is likely to overcome the injury and play, Shepparton coach Andy Ingham might again be confined to the sidelines with a knee.

Reds defender David Davkovski is also back in contention to start after coming off the bench after returning from a broken arm.

Ingham trained this week and said his knee was feeling good, but decisions on a final line-up would have to wait until the last minute.

``We've been to a number of grand finals in the last few years but there will always be nerves,'' Ingham said.

``Our younger players have taken a lot of responsibility on the field this year.''

Despite losing to Victory on penalties in the qualifying final, Ingham said he wouldn't be insisting each player practise their spot kicks.

``Some players might need to put their hand up and take a kick, so they'll be practising after training,'' he said.

``As long as you step up and strike the ball with confidence, you're a good chance to score.''
