Shepparton News

Shepparton South and Tatura are smiling after capturing five of the seven premierships on offer on North Eastern Soccer League grand final day yesterday.

South was king of the kids as it won the two youngest age categories, while Tatura made amends for some forgettable results in the deciders it qualified for last year.

The Ibises lost both the under-13 and under-15 grand finals last year and with the divisions switched to under-14 and under-16 this year, many of the same faces had the chance to make amends.

The replay of last year's under-15 grand final turned out to be a lop-sided affair in the under-16s as Tatura romped home 4-0.

Up 1-0 at the break, the game opened up for the Ibises in the second half as they piled pressure onto United's backline.

The under-14s was a different story as the Ibises needed penalties to defeat Shepparton after a scoreless draw.

Shepparton South started its day by taking out the first ever junior girls grand final 2-0 against Cobram Victory, followed by a 4-1 win for its under-12s.

The South under-11s lost the grand final to Cobram Victory last year, but did not give Shepparton an opening as it raced to a 3-0 lead before closing out the win.

South won the most contentious grand final of the day as its 1-0 win against United in men's division two was marred by disputes about the legitimacy of the game's only goal.

With tensions high after United believed the ball to have been more than a metre out of play in the build-up to the goal, two Blues were shown red cards before the game's end.
