Vince Ballerini has announced his intention to challenge for the leadership of North Eastern Soccer League next season.
The 63-year-old was a long-standing president of the league before stepping aside in 2000 to be replaced by Vince Sagoleo. But eight years away from the league's top job has not dented Ballerini's popularity among the North Eastern soccer community, with the urging of some clubs part of his motivation to make a new challenge for presidency. Current president Frank Trimboli has been in the top job for the past two seasons since succeeding Chris Davkovski, who himself succeeded Sagoleo in 2002.
``I want to give the clubs more participation in the running of the league,'' Ballerini said. ``There has been a lack of decision making and a lack of leadership in some cases.''
Issues such as the handling of tribunal sagas and also prizemoney for premiership teams were high on Ballerini's list of things to address. He was also skeptical about the prospects of the Goulburn North East region seeing a positive return if it was to invest $100000 a year in license fees into the running of a senior men's team in Summer Zone League. ``I will run if I have a team of people with me that I can work with,'' he said.
Trimboli said he would stand for re-election and welcomed any challenge for the role from the soccer community.
