Support less than hoped for

Shepparton News

A 700-odd crowd for Saturday night's state league game between Australian Institute of Sport and Preston has not been received as a failure by Shepparton president Chris Davkovski.

However, Davkovski was disappointed yesterday that the crowd at Mercury Dve had failed to top pre-game ambitions of 1000 fans.

A bitterly cold night ensured about 200 fans sat in their cars around the perimeter of the field, while a few hundred more mingled around the boundary in addition to fans in and in front of the Rumbalara clubrooms.

Pockets of travelling support from Preston's Melbourne fans bought colour and life to the crowd, but sporadic attempts to start regular chanting were unable to find momentum.

``It wasn't a failure, but we didn't get the kind of crowd to blow away expectations,'' Davkovski said.

``(Shepparton) will be looking to bring games here again in the future and we hope the North Eastern league as a whole supports them.

``We've learnt a lot about hosting an event like this from the weekend and want to improve next time.''

Gippsland and Ballarat have also hosted AIS games this season, but Shepparton South and Cobram Victory both had attempts to host AIS home games scuppered by the academy team's international tour schedule.

As of yesterday, Football Federation Victoria was unable to attain final gate-takings
