Shepparton News

A brilliant hat-trick from Samantha McIntosh has guided Shepparton into the top four of the women's North Eastern Soccer League as the Reds beat Numurkah 3-0 on Sunday.

Shepparton jumped Numurkah and Cobram Victory to snare fourth place with the win thanks to McIntosh's fourth, fifth and sixth goals of the season.

Numurkah turned in a sluggish performance, barely venturing into its forward half and giving Reds goalkeeper Rebecca Bowles a virtual day off.

Shepparton on the other hand made its intentions clear from the outset, regularly troubling the Numurkah backline with its front trio of McIntosh, Rachael Wilkinson and Taylor Iorrani.

Holding a 1-0 lead deep into the second half, McIntosh made the points safe with a thumping strike from the top of the penalty area which deflected in off the underside of the bar. Just moments earlier McIntosh had hit the bar with a 20m free kick.

Shepparton then sealed the game when McIntosh scored her third of the game with a neat finish from close range.

Jaymie Biggs patrolled the midfield for Shepparton to cut out most of Numurkah's forward ventures, while Tahnesha Gaskett marked Knights attacker Gabby Gasparroni out of the game.

``I think we played to our potential today and that's how we should play every week,'' Shepparton coach Steve Hawkes said.

``Sam can be better and I think there's more to come.

``She has a lot of potential and the rest of the team wants to draw that out of her.''

At Central Park, a Jess Theobald hat-trick gave United a comfortable win against a depleted Tatura side.

The Ibises, missing four of last year's starting 11 that pushed United in the grand final, stayed with the Blues and trailed 1-0 at half time.

But Theobald doubled the advantage when she latched onto a Holly Dimstas free kick for her second goal; Anette Aittasalmi then made the points safe with a pinpoint left-footed strike for 3-0.

Theobald's sister Sarah was the other goalscorer for United, The Blues clear top of the ladder on 21 points from Cobram on 13.
