Cobram Soccer Club members will vote on its future on Monday night at a special meeting regarding a merger with Murray Border Cobram United Soccer Club.

In a minuted meeting in December, committee representatives of both clubs discussed the merger proposal, which will be handed down to Cobram supporters and members to consider.

The News believes Cobram made the approach to Murray Border Cobram United after learning of its request to join North Eastern Soccer League late last year.

Cobram president Vince Corso would not comment on the details surrounding the merger yesterday nor on its conditions, but rather asked the club's supporters to attend Monday's meeting and judge the proposal for themselves.

"We're saying if you support the Cobram Soccer Club and have an interest, come along and see what's on the table and you decide," Corso said.

"The decision solely rests on the community."

In a copy of the December meeting's minutes seen by The News, the set-up for the proposed new club is likely to include:

A new name - Cobram United Soccer Club;

Colours - Black and yellow;

Home ground - Apex Reserve, Cobram;

Memorabilia of both clubs would be retained and preserved; and,

No current or existing memberships or life memberships from either club would be transferable.

Murray Border Cobram United president Tony Startari said his club was 100 per cent behind the merger.

"At the end of the day it's a small town and it would be great for the soccer community," Startari said.

League president Frank Trimboli said the league would not intrude on any merger talks.

"We believe that this is a matter for the supporters of those two clubs to decide their future and not for the NESL to interfere," Trimboli said.

"What we will do is provide a competition for the club or clubs to play in.

"We are now awaiting the outcome of Cobram Soccer Club's extraordinary meeting before pressing ahead with the planning of the 2007 season."

The meeting to discuss the merger will be on Monday at Barooga Sports Club at 8 pm.
