He's only 16 but Shepparton goalkeeper Jarrod Moore is already in a position of responsibility for his team, marshalling the backline of Victoria's highest-placed club in North Eastern Soccer League.

"Our defence is reliable and doesn't let much through," Moore said.

"That makes my job a lot easier.

"I've got a lot to learn and the backline helps me out."

Moore has previously trialled for a place in the Victorian Institute of Sport team and has played representative football for North Eastern Soccer League and Victoria Country.

"Shot stopping and communication are the best parts of my game," he said.

The Reds take on Shepparton South this weekend, Moore highlighting 18-year-old striker Brendan Barton as one of the threats to his goal.

"I've played against Brendan a couple of times," Moore said.

"He's a good player with a good left foot."

Moore was confident that his performance on the weekend would go some way to earning Shepparton a victory over its cross-town rival.

"Last season we lost 2-0 to South and I didn't keep that well," he said.

"But with a bit more experience now I'll be better.

"Hopefully we can get into second this week and keep working our way up.

"Top is what we're aiming for, every point puts us closer to the finals.

"There's a bit of a rivalry against South, but it's just not the same as what we have with United."

South's opening goal last weekend against Tatura came from a penalty, Moore hoping that he wouldn't be facing any spot-kicks in the near future.

"Last season I stopped a few, but lately it's not been so good," Moore said.

"We should have a defence which won't concede penalties to begin with."

Moore was well aware that his team's performances were more important than his own record.

"I'd rather win than keep a clean sheet," he said.
