Newton Returns to the Pack

The Chambers Franklyn City of Joondalup Wolves are excited to announce the return of, power forward, Mitchell Newton for the 2022 NBL1 West season.

Mitchell joined the Wolves last season and successfully bounced back from a few previous injuries. His basketball history includes playing for the NZ Breakers in the NBL, multiple seasons in SEABL and the Big V, opportunities with Melbourne United, experience with the Tall Blacks, and two NZ NBL Championships with the Hawkes Bay Hawks and Southland Sharks.

New NBL1 Men’s Head Coach, David Morrell, shared his thoughts on Mitchell’s return,

“Re-signing and keeping Mitchell around for another season is a big move for us as a squad. Last year he came in a little later in the season and didn’t have a chance to work himself into shape and into a basketball rhythm in time to be a huge contributor on the level that he would have expected from himself. But we are talking about a player that has had a lot of high-level experience. This year, we expect that he can be a big contributor for us.

At 6’6, Mitch is really powerful and skilled. He can defend bigger players, he moves his feet, he can shoot, score 1v1, and he has the sort of top notch feel and basketball IQ that only comes from the sort of high-level experiences he has had in his career. Mitch is a winner, highly competitive, and he will do whatever it takes to lead us in that direction as a team. We are really lucky to have him back this year.”

When asked about his return to the Wolves this season Mitchell said,

“I’m excited for the season. We have a good group of talented guys and I can’t wait to get out on court to play alongside them. I feel we have a championship winning team.”

Mitchell will be joining CJ Turnage, Jonathan Wade, Jordan Wellsteed, Gabe Chadinha, Julian Pesava, Joel Vaiangina, Josh Bloxham, Jermaine Malie, Tom Parkinson, Luca O’Brien, Ned Oneran, and Ben Geel on the 2022 Wolves Men’s roster.
