QBL Women Round 2 Game Previews-

Toowoomba Mountaineers v Caboolture Suns, Sat 2nd May 5:15pm @ Toowoomba Basketball Stadium-
The Toowoomba Mountaineers will be looking for more from their Forwards in Round 2 after a slow start to the 2009 season.  The team only managed 20 of 59 from the field and combined with 26 turnovers saw them come up short at 46-60 against the Ipswich Force.  Emily Tudman steps into her first year in the League and will have quite a role to fill- she hit 13pts at 50% to top the Mountaineers in Round 1.  The Suns have a very similar team with no 1 or 2 standout offensive players, rather the workload is shared.  Marnie Saunders has a career-to-date average of 7pts, 7rbs and Coach Saltmarsh will be pushing for more from her.  The Suns weren't able to match the Clippers last week despite a final quarter surge.  Expect a low scoring game but one that packs alot of punch as one team will walk away from this one on a losing streak.

Ipswich Force v South West Metro Pirates, Sat 2nd May 5:15pm @ Ipswich Basketball Stadium-
Erin Brady and Jessica Wallis of the South West Pirates stand to spoil the party for the Force here.  Brady brings a 16pts, 5rb, 3ast average to the table and is coming off the back of a solid game in Round 1.  Wallis is as strong and has history and experience playing for Bundaberg, Brisbane and now South West- together these two will prove a huge handful for the home team to control.  The Force rounded out 2008 in 10th position and are one team who continually strive to better themselves from year to year.  The team needs to build on their 29% from the field in Round 1 if they want to stay with the Pirates.  Courtney Taylor played outside of her skin last week and at only 20 years old she has a solid foundation to grow from.  Too hard to pick a winner here.

Brisbane Capitals v Cairns Dolphins, Sat 2nd May 6:00pm @ Vince Hickey Stadium-
The pressure has been building on the Cairns Dolphins all week and this culminates on Saturday night when the Capitals have a chance to put the Dolphins on a 3-game losing streak.  The Capitals played a good game to kick off their campaign and under the guidance of Coach Austin managed to duck and weave the new WNBL talent of the Northside Wizards and collect a 56-52 win.   The Dolphins need to put their 2 big margin losses behind them from last week and focus on defending the basket.  No Capitals player shot into double-figures last week and if the Dolphins can exploit this apparent offensive weakness then they would of found a loophole in the law and could just walk away the victor.

Maroochydore Clippers v Northside Wizards, Sat 2nd May 6:00pm @ Maroochydore Basketball Stadium-
Despite only playing 7 players last week and a mental lapse in the final quarter, the Maroochydore Clippers still managed a win over the Caboolture Suns.  It's all about Kirsty Dallas and Kristina Innemee for the Clippers with both players carrying a large workload from Round 1.  They know the Wizards new recruits have strength and need to be wary.  Megan Michael and Bianca Abbott are both Logan Thunder WNBL players and if they reveal their true colours in this game then expect some fireworks.  Abbott collect 20pts and 17rbs last week while Michael remain relatively quiet for her first game with the Wizards with 5pts, 5rbs, 6asts.  Can the new look Wizards get their season moving in the right direction?

Gladstone Power v Townsville Flames, Sat 2nd May 6:00pm @ Kev Broome Stadium-
This one would have to be the pick game of the week.  The Gladstone Power are re-enthused with the addition of Jessica Bibby (Round 1 Player of the Week) and Natalie Hurst to the team.  It's a known fact that these 2 players can handle the toughest uphill battle thrown at them of which this stands to be.  The local Power players seem to be stepping up as well and this is a chance for the home team to create history by stopping the Townsville Flames reach a milestone of 49 wins in a row.  The Power have nothing to lose and going into the game with that mentality is what could create the upset of the year.  The Flames won't be a walk in the park by any means though.  Aroon Edgar needs to prove her new abilities by backing up again, and with question marks on Cherie Smith and whether she will make the journey south, is there trouble in paradise waters?

Gold Coast Gliders v Cairns Dolphins, Sun 3rd May 12:15pm @ Tallebudgera Leisure Centre-
The Gold Coast Gliders did a fantastic job to stay with the Pirates last week.  Even though they didn't collect the win, they can take positive gains away from the game and approach this game confidently.  The team is a new mix of faces with Jade Abele (20pts, 11rbs in Round 1) the current leader.  The Dolphins Saturday night game will have a huge effect on how this game pans out.  They will either arrive with their sights set high after a Saturday night win over the Capitals, or be down in the dumps on a run of 4 losses.  The Gliders need to exploit this whichever way it falls if they wish to get their first points on the ladder also.  Head- to-head Dolphins slightly stronger but given that this is game number two all bets are off.

Rockhampton Cyclones v Townsville Flames, Sun 3rd May 12:15pm @ Hegvold Stadium-
The Rockhampton Cyclones open their account for the 2009 season here and what a way to do so.  The team has a few new faces in US import Leah Rush and Australian Opal Abby Bishop.  Bishop is an enthusiastic 21 year old who currently plays with Canberra in the WNBL and averaged 16pts, 11rbs last year which is a small insight of what to expect from her this season.  The Cyclone women have historically had a slow start to each year but the feeling around town is somewhat different this year.  The Power will throw everything at this team on Saturday night and the Cyclones will then get a chance at the left overs on Sunday afternoon.  The Flames are a proven success story who can never be counted out of a game.  By Sunday afternoon they'll either be continuing their winning streak or shocked at the new strength of the women's QBL in 2009.
