The NSAFL was proud to host its first ever inter-provincial game of Aussie Rules under a sunny Nova Scotian sky on Saturday Oct. 5th at the Wanderers Grounds in Halifax. The game was a friendly match between the home town Halifax Dockers and the Toronto Dingos and the first of its kind ever played in Nova Scotia. The Dockers went into the game with a squad of 16 players all of whom are the direct result of a summer full of recruiting and promoting the game here in Halifax. The Dockers had their hands full from the moment the ball was bounced as the seasoned Dingo outfit quickly adjusted to the 9-a-side style of play and rugby size playing field.
The Dockers were able to hang with the Dingos for the first half, but, by the time the final siren sounded, the Dingos had shown why they finished Runner–Up in the OAFL this year. The success of this game is yet another milestone for the NSAFL to celebrate this year. It has been one year since the Fremantle Football Club in Australia agreed to help develop the game in Halifax and in that time the NSAFL has been able to increase its player roster, participate in the QAFL’s pre-season tournament, run a weekly 9-a-side game throughout the summer and gain plenty of local media attention along the way.
This October the Halifax Dockers will also be involved in a two game series of International Rules Football against the Halifax Gaelic Football Club before the NSAFL season officially finishes on the last weekend of October. Over the winter months the NSAFL aims to promote the game of Australian Rules Football in local Halifax schools and will also conduct a weekly indoor session that will be open to the public.
