Tigers Announce Senior Coach
The Werribee Football Club is pleased to announce the appointment of Paul Satterley as the full time Senior Coach of the Tigers for the next two years
A former player at the club and Liston Trophy winner, in the past two years Paul has been the Development Coach overseeing the first and second year players. He was also an integral part of the establishment of the Werribee Football Club Academy, devised to plan a pathway for new players to fulfil their potential as senior players.
Werribee President John Nicol made the announcement today at Avalon Airport Oval.
“This is a very big day for the club, naming its first full time Senior Coach. Thanks to David Lyons who headed up the sub committee, which went through the process from start to finish. The sub committee included our AFL partner North Melbourne, who fully endorse the appointment. We are pleased that a former star player - a WRFL premiership coach, Western Jets and Northern Knights coach and importantly a solid citizen in Paul Satterley - is now the Werribee Senior Coach. Paul has left a senior management role at Don Smallgoods to take this position, which illustrates his commitment, dedication and passion for the Werribee Football Club. I have every confidence in his ability to bring success to Avalon Airport Oval.”
David Lyons, Football Director of the club, was equally enthused.
“We have all known Paul for many years and he is highly regarded by everyone in football. His presentation and his thoughts and plans for the future of the club were in perfect synergy with what the club was seeking. His experience - not only in football but in business - of leading a team of people will produce the results we are looking for at the club.”
Paul Satterley knows the ups and downs of football. He was drafted to the Bulldogs in the 1992 draft from the Western Jets. He did not play a senior game in his three years at the club and then went to Werribee where in his first year (1995) he won the JJ Liston Trophy and represented the state. After six seasons and 83 games, a serious back injury led to a move to Hoppers Crossing in the WRFL where he played in the 2002 premiership side and then after retiring in 2002, coached the club for three years, winning the 2004 flag. In 2006, he was Assistant Coach at the Western Jets and Midfield Coach of Williamstown followed by two years as Head Coach of the Northern Knights before returning to Werribee in a part time role as Development and Academy Manager.
The father of four thought long and hard before applying for the Werribee role.
“I have enjoyed more than eight years with Don KRC Smallgoods and I have a young family so this is a significant step for me and my family. My family fully supported me going for the job because football is my absolute passion. I see this as a fantastic opportunity to coach a football club that is well run off the field and has the structure and talent to achieve success. I have my own ideas on how we can achieve that success and I am looking forward to working with the people at the club now and the new people that will come into the club to make that happen. It is a huge challenge but one I know I am ready for.”
