Ross Anderson Previews round 11

Football NSW

The top four does have some points of difference from recent seasons with Sydney University, NWS Koalas and the Marconi Stallions building on the promise shown in 2010 to now become title challengers. Poised in fifth spot, with a star studded line up and gathering momentum, are the perennial finalists the Macarthur Rams. These four sides are separated by only one point. Now seven points back in sixth place are the Sutherland Shire girls, who have made a significant improvement this season.

This Sunday features what promises to be a breathtaking game of football between the league’s two leading sides when the Illawarra Stingrays travel to Hensley Athletic Field to take on Sydney University.

The Stingrays credentials are unquestioned. Chasing a third successive Football NSW Women’s Premier League title the Illawarra side haven’t put a foot wrong so far this season. Whilst the Premiers haven’t necessarily been seen at their best every week they’ve done enough to display their dominance and take the competition points. Last weekend a determined Marconi side made Illawarra play for ninety minutes before The Stingrays scored two sensational goals to give them victory. That would have been just the preparation Stingrays Coach Brett Wallin would have been looking for prior to this weekend’s game. With a team full of potential match winners the Illawarra side offer a unique challenge to any side hoping to take their title.

Sydney University have been a street corner tip for honours this year since the pre season trial matches commenced. Having recruited some class players in the off season to compliment an already competitive squad Sydney University crave success in 2011. There’s been some moments of brilliance from the side already this season but there’s also been a few instances where the team hasn’t played to their potential. University’s matches against their fellow title aspirants haven’t panned out well; a 2-2 draw with NWS Koalas after leading 2-0 at half time, a 1-0 loss to Marconi Stallions in what was probably the match of the season so far and last weekend’s 4-1 result against Macarthur Rams. It’s time for the Sydney University side to prove their premiership credentials and what better way to do so than with a win over the competition’s benchmark team.

This will be one hell of a match between the competitions two best attacking sides. Be prepared for a feast of exciting football.
