Sat May 26- This week we traveled out to Epping to play in the typical windy conditions we have come to expect over the years. The ground was in magnificent condition, the grass was green and lush while the ground itself was soft. What is hard to believe is that Epping are not allowed to train on this beautiful ground.
The opening game of the day saw the 19's dominant. It did look shaky by quarter time as with the aide of the strong wind the boys only put on 1 goal 5 to Eppings solitary goal against the wind and looked like a valuable opportunity had been lost. However the second quarter against the wind was outstanding as they kicked four goals and almost kept Epping scoreless. After half time it was all one way traffic as Monty ran away 12 goal winners. Tim Moulas was dominant around the ground while out on the wing, Kent Ohanessian played the game of his life and definately shared the best on ground honours with Tim. Every player contributed today, and it was wonderful to hear the club song in the changerooms after the game. For the players such as Nick Attard that played last season without winning a game it must be a great feeling to get one on the board.
The Reserve side also had a good win giving Hoffy two wins in a row with the claim he is back in town. Before the game Hoffy actually had the issue of too many players to choose from for the first time this year, though this didn't stop both Tim Moulas and Matt Reinkie from the 19's playing almost the entire seconds game. Both boys played 8 quarters of football on the massive Epping ground and both must be feeling it now. Oh what it would be like to be young again. There was one Kodak moment when Zac Anver and Tim Moulas embraced in the goal square, it highlighted the changing of the guard at this football club as a club legend embraced the current 19's captain.
The main game left us all with the question, can we win a clean sweep for the first time this year? By the end of the first quarter the question was still in doubt as even though we kicked against a strong wind we got the goal kicking yips scoring two goals seven points. The memory of the West Preston game must have come to mind of the Monty faithful. Things turned around in the second quarter where we kicked seven goals one point to have a comfortable buffer going into half time.
To Eppings' credit they never stopped all day, and 8 goals by their U19 player Aaron Willets looked like it was going to spoil the day for Monty. Amazingly Epping despite losing did win three of the four quarters which is a concern for the Jack and the coaching staff, but when our boys are on, there is no team that can stop them. All we need to do now is play all four quarters at high intensity.
Any win is a good win, and even though we managed to keep Epping in the game with inaccurate kicking at goal, to have our first clean sweep of the year is a relief. Time now to consolidate the the season and improve from today with many more clean sweeps.
