Kicking with the wind in the first, the Nodders had a reasonable start, taking a 4-goal lead into the first break. Old Camberwell hit back in the second, steaming past Mazenod to take a 6-point lead into the main break. Steve and Liam Welsford were playing to their usual high standards, but the opposition dominance – even with the wind – was a concern. Those concerns were quickly put to bed in the third, as the hard-tackling, hard-running Mazenod that had emerged in the first five quarters of Season 2016 returned. A 7-goal third term gave the Nodders a 24-point lead at the final change, but with Old Camberwell kicking with the breeze in the last, it looked set for a close finish. However, Mazenod kicked two early goals to settle any nerves and eventually ran out 43-point winners. Tom Cincotta was outstanding, kickcing four goals in a BOG performance, while young key forward Kieran McKeogh demonstrated his ability with four of his own. Old Camberwell Grammarians 2.1-13 6.8-44 8.9-57 10.12-72 Mazenod OC 6.1-37 6.2-38 13.3-81 18.7-115 Goal Kickers: K. McKeogh 4, T. Cincotta 4, F. Reed 2, B. Kovac 2, M. Sier, R. Mann, L. Welsford, S. Byrne Reserves The Reserves were again good in patches, but could not sustain the effort for long enough to claim victory. Despite leading at half time, they fell 7 points short at the final siren. Matt Rich led from the front while James Sharp and Jeremy Devlin kicked three goals apiece in a low-scoring game. Old Camberwell Grammarians 2.1-13 3.4-22 6.10-46 8.11-59 Mazenod OC 3.1-19 4.3-27 4.5-29 7.10-52 Goal Kickers: J. Sharp 3, J. Devlin 3, S. Forster Best Players: M. Rich, M. Rice, J. Walton, A. Taun-Henderson, J. Sharp, T. Odrowaz Under 19s The 19s were a little slow out of the blocks, but they got cracking in the second half, kicking 9 goals while holding Marcellin to just 5 behinds. The end result was a convincing 54-point victory. Sam Deegan and Daniel Mydaras led the way while Corey Martino contributed three goals. Marcellin OC 3.2-20 6.2-38 6.5-41 6.7-43 Mazenod 1.2-8 5.4-34 7.5-47 14.13-97 Goal Kickers: C. Martino 3, J. Hill 2, J. Murdock 2, M. D''Angelo 2, D. Mydaras, D. Spooner, D. Fowler, M. Zogoulas, S. Deegan Best Players: S. Deegan, D. Mydaras, D. Wiles, M. D''Angelo, C. Martino, D. Spooner Colts The Colts were gunning it from the get-go, kicking 8 first quarter-goals. By the end of the third, it was fifteen goals to nil and a massacre was on the cards, but the Nodders took the foot off the pedal and were outscored in the last. However, the game was well and truly over by that point and Mazenod recorded a 65-point win. Tom Riley probably has his name on Ben Phibbs’ watch list after kicking five goals, although he may have been overshadowed by Lachlan McKenna and Josh Cochrane who won plenty of the ball.
