NOBLE PARK – MATCH REPORT Rd13

SENIORS FINAL SCORE – NOBLE PARK 16-19-115 def VERMONT 16-10-108
A mostly fine cool day with the ground surface soft from recent rain. Smith made way for Holmes who was a late withdrawal last week. The Bulls came to Vermont after losing 3 of their last 4 and another loss would see them in the ladder ruck for 5th spot.
In hindsight we went into the match a ground level player short. Except for the second quarter they had our measure. They appeared quicker, they punished us at the centre breaks winning the first quarter 8-1 and finishing the match 23-13. They also played our ground to perfection with long direct kicking and only handball when needed.
NP kicked with the breeze to the southern goal and were quickly on the board with 2 goals from free kicks. Greig again obliged the punters with first goal via Mullett, Davidson and Bardon. Rushton kicked a terrific snap but they were killing us in the mid-field with their long direct play. They kicked the next 4 goals to lead at ¼ time by 28 points. NP 6-7-43 to Vermont 2-3-15.
In the second term we kicked 7-6 to 3-1. Greig was to have a terrific quarter, he kicked the first via Bardon and when O’Grady goaled things were looking much better. NP goaled then Bardon made a wonderful intercept that resulted in a Greig goal. When Davidson goaled via Bardon and Froud snapped the next, one could sense the tide was starting to turn. Greig made it 4 for the quarter with the next two goals courtesy of Cullen then Morse. Right on the siren NP regained the lead with a late goal. ½ tine score – NP 9-9-63 to Vermont 9-8-62. Better players for the half were – Bardon, Greig, Rushton, Morse, Mullett, Cassidy, Cullen and Nummy.
It was the Bull’s turn with the breeze and they added 4-6 to 4-3. They kicked the first of the second half before Froud kick a good crumbing goal. Bardon goaled via Mullett and Talevski but NP quickly replied. Hall was imposing himself on the game and was backed up by Ross. McCarty, although under pressure was doing well. In fact the back 6 were under pressure all day. Ross snapped a beauty with Rushton in the lead up then Millhouse who was used sparingly off the bench kicked a good angle goal. Just when we thought we were getting on top and with the breeze to come in the last quarter Noble Park kicked the next two. They were fired up and refused to be broken. At ¾ time NP led 13-15 to 13-11.
Our destiny was clearly in our hands, the wind was worth 3-4 goals. We got off to the best possible start when Talevski goaled via Holmes then Cullen snapped a beauty. But Noble Park to their credit kicked the next 3 to lead by 12 points. When Froud goaled late in the term NP led by 6 points with 3 minutes to go showing on the scoreboard. They got the all important centre break through Ferraro who kicked long for a behind and they led by 2 scoring shots and given the events of the last 15 minutes we were never going to achieve that. NP winners by 7 points and a most deserved win.
Goalkickers – Greig 5, Froud 3 and singles to Ross, Millhouse, Talevski, O’Grady, Davidson, Bardon, Cullen and Rushton.
Best Players – Bardon, Cassidy, Rushton, Mullett, Morse, Greig, Cullen and Hall.
Possessions – Bardon 34, Mullett 33, McCarthy 22, Rushton 20 and Morse 19.
1%- Mullett 13, Cassidy 12, Bardon 10, Morse, Nummy and O’Grady 9 and McCarthy 8.
Coach’s Comments – We had a light week. They put an enormous amount of pressure on us. We were not as sharp as we could have been. It was not the way we wanted to celebrate Papps and Greggy’s 100th games.
RESERVES FINAL SCORE – VERMONT 12-13-85 def NOBLE PARK 8-3-51
As I had to compere the Eagletonians lunch the match details were passed on to me by John McCarthy. A low scoring first term with our goals coming from Ford and Mendes via L.Davis. At ¼ time we led 2-5 to 1-1.
Just one goal each in the second quarter with our lone goal coming from Balis. Matty Smith received a yellow card and he certainly came back a played a good game.At ½ time we led 3-8 to 2-2. Better players for the half were – Mendes, Griffiths, McLure, Stewart and Jones. Clinton Jones played 3 quarters with the Colts and proved he is a player of the future.
In the 3rd quarter NP hit the front for a time. Smith was back and had 11 possessions for the quarter. Goals came from Bordin, Stewart and Wignall. Illott had a good quarter. At ¾ time we led 6-13 to 5-2.
Noble Park gave us a scare when they kicked 2 quick goals to get within 5 points but we slammed on the next 5 goals with Rosewarne kicking 2 and singles to Smith, Dressing and Bordin. Smith and Illott were again good. Vermont continues it’s march to the finals winning by 34 points.
Goalkickers – Rosewarne 2, Bordin 2 and singles to Smith, Dressing, Ford, Mendes, Balis, Stewart and Wignall.
Coach’s Best Players – Whitchell, Griffiths, Mendes, McLure, Bright and Jones.
Coach’s Comments – A fantastic effort except for the lapse in the 3rd quarter. We buried them in the last quarter. We have played the top sides and have locked them away. The half back line was exceptional. Jeff praised the efforts of colts player Clinton Jones.
COLTS FINAL SCORE – VERMONT 28-11-179 def NOBLE PARK 7-11-53
It was obvious the colt’s had come to play. Two incidents early in the first quarter
set the tone – Huisman’s run down tackle that resulted in our first goal through Henderson then a brilliant smother by Setyana. Ryan and Huisman each kicked two goals with help from McKernan, Rogneda and McInerney.
At ¼ time we led 5-3 to 2-1.
We kicked 7 goals to 1 in the second term. Debney kicked the first 2 with the last via McInerney. Murphy goaled via McInerney then the nest 2 goals came from soccer kicks off the ground by Romas and McKernan. McKernan goaled again then Debney kicked his third for the quarter via Siakavalis. By half time we had broken the game wide open and led 12-8 to 3-5. Better players for the half were – McInerney, Henderson, Rogneda, Dore, Geraghty, Huisman, Debney and McKernan.
It was a 7 goal to 3 third term. McDonald goaled via Debney and McInerney. McDonald goaled again then McKernan who was having a day out snapped a beauty via early lead up work in defence by Quon. I made a note at this point that Setyana’s work rate was terrific. McInerney who again was playing an exceptional game goaled twice – the first was a running goal and the second after Dore went in and got the hard one. NP kicked a couple before McDonald kicked his 3rd for the quarter then Rogneda goaled via Geraghty. At ¾ time we led 19-9 to 6-10.
It rained goals in the last quarter as we kicked 9-2 to 1-1. We were accurate for a change. Debney kicked 3 in the last term, McDonald kicked 2 more while Carrados, Huisman, Rogneda and Ryan kicked each kicked one.Vermont big winners by 126 points. Better players for the half were – McInerney, McDonald, Cameron, Dore, Debney, Jones, McKernan and Hazelwood.
Goalkickers – Debney 6, McDonald 5, Ryan 3, McKernan 3, Huisman 3, McInerney 2, Rogneda 2 and singles to Murphy, Henderson, Romas and Garrados.
Coach’s Best Players- Setyana, Cameron, McDonald, Huisman and Rogneda.
Coach’s Comments – Some weeks ago we set ourselves to win the next 6 games – we completed that task today. A fantastic performance to win by 21 goals. Our run off half back and through the middle was terrific.
