The C Res girls took on Heatherton this week who were sitting in 3rd place above the girls on the ladder. Knowing they had a fight on their hands, the plan was to take the lead in the first, and try and maintain it through the rest of the game. Heatherton were strong in defense, but saw Han Bevis and Jules Telfer rise to the occasion. Tahlia and Charly put on a great show down in the Yarra’s defensive end creating ample turnovers for the girls to capitalise on. Best on went to Tahlia for her incredible work not only in defense but also offering great attacking support through the mid. The Yarra’s took the win over Heatherton 40 – 16 placing them second on the ladder – another great win for the C Res girls!
This week C grade took on St Kilda City. We welcomed Stephanie Hudson and Laura Carrol to the team for the first time this season and slid into their positions seamlessly. This game was a full team effort with all players knowing their roles and playing them perfectly. Alex Wright could do no wrong, gaining best on ground for her ease of transition from the defence end to the attacking end. The Yarra’s entered the last quarter with a 7 point lead and in the final quarter were able to put their foot down and pushed the lead out considerably. Final score was St Kilda City 21 to Yarras 37. Great work Yarras!
This week B grade took on Caulfield Yellow. We saw the new additions of Claire Murray and Molly O’Bryan in to the team. South Yarra fought hard to stay in front the first half but the experienced opposition caught up with the final score being 46 to 52. Best on went to Greta Stevens.
A grade lined up against the second placed Caulfield. Down a few key rotations, Meg Hurley stepped up to play a pivotal role in GD, making numerous deflections and interceptions in and out of the ring. Hayley Becker was able to shoot very accurately despite the strong winds which assisted the Yarras to head into the last break with the lead. The last quarter saw us push this lead even further eventually coming away with a very pleasing win.

The weather on Sunday was definitely not on our side (or anyone’s side for that matter) with torrential rain hitting the oval as we arrived for warm up. However, the clouds parted and the sun came out sporadically for the duration of our game against Murrumbeena. With a new recruit running onto the field with seconds to spare, we borrowed one player to bring us to 12. The first 2 quarters saw us being hesitant in attack and too polite in defense with Murrumbeena kicking most of their goals before half time. After some sound advice from our coach to be more aggressive on the field, we came back on with full gusto and perseverance. Our defensive shepherds were our saving grace as Ammo and Lucy both kicked goals to put some numbers on the board. Some big kicks from the middle and some dry hands from Benita gave us another 2 goals (one on the siren which unfortunately didn’t count). Although it took us til half time to really warm up (quite literally), we played a great game and recruited a new player! Final score; South Yarra 3.7-25 Murrumbeena 7.8-50
The thirds this week came up against bottom placed Keysborough. This was to be no walk in the park however, with Keysborough enjoying the services of several players “playing down” after their other sides played last week. Accurate kicking ensured the Yarras were up after the first quarter, kicking 3.0 to Keysborrough’s 1.8. A strong start to the second term saw South Yarra look like they were going to run away with it, before a late run saw Keysborough put on a few quick goals and even up the quarter. The third term was another even affair, and Keysborough went into the final change leading by one point. Despite a spirited effort, Keysborough proved too much to overcome in the final term, and ran away 14 point winners, while South Yarra succumbed to just their second loss of the season, and look to next week’s clash with Black Rock to redeem themselves.
The Reserves were set a hard task against Springvale Districts as they sat top of the ladder and undefeated. Their structures and discipline showed why they were the dominate side in the competition. The Yarras could not get close to the ladder leaders. Auto managed to score the Yarras only goal within only a minute left on the clock. The Yarras defenders limited the Demons score to just 11-12-78 despite the Demons holding possession of the football for the majority of the match.
The Seniors also took on highly fancied Springvale Districts, coming off an improved showing in their last outing the Yarras played well. While the final score was a 10 odd goal loss the boys never backed down or rolled over. N Pane kicked 3 goals while Maher's kicked a beauty from down the hill in the pocket. The back line can also hold their heads high with Rogers and Rusty featuring in the bests. Next week we face Blackrock and will go in looking forward to a tighter game than last time we met.
