Match Report by Ben Carbonaro

Werribee coach Scott West was all smiles after his team’s 14-point win over the Northern Blues at Avalon Airport Oval last Saturday.
The Tigers started strongly, kicking the first two goals courtesy of Lachlan Hansen and Robbie Tarrant. It didn’t go all Werribee’s way as Northern kicked three goals and had the momentum, but the Tigers came back through Sam Gibson to lead by a mere four points at quarter time.
It was a perfect start to the second quarter for Werribee as Gibson kicked another goal followed by three more to give Werribee the upper hand. The Blues struggled with Werribee’s superior ball handling and delivery for much of the quarter. A late Blues goal saw Werribee lead by 30 points at the main break.
The Blues were a different team after the half-time break as they kicked five unanswered goals and Werribee were struggling to. Speedy midfielder Ben Speight kicked a late goal to help the Tigers to a six point lead.
Werribee recovered in defence restricting Northern to two goals and kicked three of their own. While the Blues attempted to snatch the lead several times, a display of superior skills and midfield speed got Werribee home.
West was pleased with a third consecutive win, but was disappointed with his team’s drop off after leading by five goals at half time.
“We got the four points, any day you win is good.
That was probably the disappointing part (dropping off) after half-time, my expectation was that we start the game again and the intensity par was to increase. To their credit they showed us how to do it.
I think since the Williamstown game, which was bitterly disappointing, we’ve learnt that teams are going to come at you and you’re going to have to change your game/attitude. It was pleasing that we were able to come back and win the game.”
Kangaroos forward Tarrant kicked four goals to put his hand for inclusion at AFL level and fellow Roo Lachlan Hansen was best on ground for his strong marking inside forward 50. Ben Ross continued his superb form in the midfield to again be named as one of the Werribee’s best and be in contention for this weekend’s state game against Tasmania.
Hansen’s strong marking and general work rate impressed West.
“He’s in terrific form at the moment, Lachie.
Even in the wet a couple of weeks ago against Coburg, he was in great form. He’s marking everything and creating a contest for our smalls to crumb, it’s all we ask of him.”
There is a league wide bye this weekend due to the VFL v TSL state game in Hobart and Werribee are back on deck when they host Collingwood on Saturday 2nd June.
