Match Report by Ben Carbonaro
While cold and windy weather is often called real football weather, it means that a football team has to grind out a win.
That’s exactly what the Werribee Tigers had to do in their 20-point win over West Perth at the MCG last Saturday.
It was tough for both teams to get the ball moving quickly due to the wet conditions. In the opening quarter, both sides kicked one goal but many scoring opportunities went begging for both teams. The Tigers got on top in the second quarter kicking four goals to two to hold a handy seven point lead at half time.
Werribee’s third quarter performance set up the win after an inconsistent first half from both teams. Relentless pressure from the Tigers all over the ground helped them gain an upper hand over West Perth, who kicked just four behinds. The Tigers led by 18 points at the final break.
Several sprayed shots on goal cost West Perth as they looked to regain the momentum they had earlier in the game. The Tigers continued to be much cleaner with the football all over the ground. Three goals to two in the final quarter allowed helped Werribee to their second win of this year’s Foxtel Cup campaign.
Robbie Tarrant, Ben McKinley and Jordan Treloar all chipped in with two goals for the Tigers, while Will Martiniello (24 disposals) was best on ground.
Aaron Black kicked two goals to be best for West Perth.
They will now meet Queensland club Morningside in the next phase of the competition on July 7th.
The Tigers return to VFL action with a home against Sandringham on Sunday at Avalon Airport Oval and action gets underway at 2pm.
