Match Report by Ben Carbonaro
Despite wet and windy conditions, the Werribee Tigers worked hard at every opportunity in their 79-point demolition of Sandringham at Avalon Airport Oval last Saturday.
It was a very evenly matched first quarter as both teams took a while to adjust the conditions. Sandringham kicked five goals to four to lead by a slender five points at quarter time.
Werribee’s defensive pressure stepped up during the second quarter and it had the desired effect, as the visitors were held to a single goal. Sandringham’s inability to break the intense defensive pressure saw them give away six goals to one and trail by 26 points at half-time.
Despite the third quarter being a low scoring one with just four goals (Werribee two and Sandringham two) kicked between the two teams, the Tigers still held the upper hand. As the rain continued to pour down, Werribee kept its 26 point lead at the final break.
A huge final quarter sealed a fifth consecutive win for the Tigers as they piled on a staggering eight goals to Sandringham’s one behind.
Tigers coach Scott West was pleased to make it five wins in a row against a highly rated Sandringham team.
“If I had have been told before the game that (79-point win) was going to be the result, I would have thought you were pulling my leg.
I rate them highly, they’re quality opposition and to get that result was really pleasing.”
Consistency across each quarter was a feature of the Tigers win and West rated the win equal to the round 10 drubbing of Collingwood.
“It was up there with Collingwood, I know they had a lot of injuries but I thought we played really consistent over the four quarters in that game as well.
We’ve been pretty consistent in our games; unfortunately the opposition come at you so the run of the game doesn’t always go your way.”
Ben Warren continued his good form as he kicked four goals while North Melbourne’s Ben Speight was best for his outstanding game in the midfield to go with his three goals .
For Sandringham, Myke Cook kicked two goals and Daniel Markworth was best on ground.
The Tigers travel to Windy Hill to take on Bendigo next Saturday, with the fist bounce scheduled for 2pm.
