Our Gatekeepers by Daniel Paproth
At the start of the season the Werribee Football Club entered into a partnership with the Salvation Army in what both parties hoped would be a beneficial community initiative and it has certainly turned out that way.
The Salvation Army has greeted punters at the entrance gates throughout the season, taking over the ticket booth from club volunteers.
Wyndham City Salvation Army Captain Lance Jeffrey says it been a great opportunity not just for the two parties, but also the community.
“We really wanted to form a partnership that was community oriented. Footy draws everyone from the community and we really want to be a part of that. We’re very thankful that Werribee Football Club has given us the opportunity to get on board.”
Captain Jeffrey and Werribee General Manager Mark Penaluna met at a council meeting and decided to pursue the partnership.
Captain Jeffrey says the Tigers have a great standing in the local community.
“The footy club is a real hub of the area and a whole range of people from all walks of life come to be a part of it, and that’s part of our work as well. Werribee also gave us the chance to promote the Red Shield Appeal, which was very successful.”
The Red Shield Appeal is the Salvation Army’s major annual fundraiser to finance its range of social and community services. The Werribee office regularly helps out 30 to 40 families per week with food, clothing, bills and other issues and also runs youth and mentoring programs in the suburb.
The club thanks Lance and his team and hopes the gold coin entry donations today from supporters will help out.
