Werribee v East Fremantle Foxtel Cup Semi Final
The beauty of the 2013 Foxtel Cup is that it is a television event first and foremost, which means you can be anywhere in Australia and enjoy the thrills and spills of a unique competition on a Tuesday night. I was sitting in my cabin at the RACV Resort in Inverloch, enjoying the crisp country air, after a nice dinner, ready for a close encounter between the Werribee Tigers and the East Fremantle Sharks. Mother nature had other ideas, she wanted me to watch a game where lifeguards would have been more practical than boundary umpires and our midfield needed Thorpe, Perkins and Hackett rather than Moore, Gysberts and Warren. The conditions were atrocious but that was no excuse for the poor start by the Tigers which in the end was the difference in the game. East Fremantle kicked the first three goals of the game, then Werribee kicked one, but by half time the difference was 29 points. To be honest, it looked GAME OVER.
If it was possible the conditions were even worse in the second half and the scores reflect that. After half time East Fremantle added 2 points and Werribee advanced by 1 goal 1 point.
No one likes to lose any game and I know Scott West, the players and staff will be disappointed with the final result but in the big picture of the season it is hard to make this loss a big issue.
The game this Sunday against Casey Scorpions is vital to our finals campaign and hopefully those players who have to back up will be able to do so after the taxing conditions they endured at Patersons Stadium.
While no one will jump on the plane doing cartwheels, Ben Brown should be pleased with his game. For someone of his height and weight, his display in the conditions was superb.
Ok, Foxtel Cup is over, let’s concentrate on the 2013 VFL season and a big end to the season.
East Fremantle 6.4.40 def Werribee 2.4. 16
