Tigers continue its unbeaten pre-season
The Werribee Tigers has continued its promising pre-season form, with a dominant 46 point win over the North Ballarat Roosters.
The Tigers made the journey to a very cold and blustery Eureka Stadium in Ballarat, with both sides struggling to deal with the breeze early on.
After a slow start, where the Tigers were held goalless in the first quarter, a run of 11 consecutive goals from midway through the second quarter helped set up the win.
Tigers coach John Lamont described the match as two contrasting halves, but was pleased with his sides intent early on.
“Even though we didn't kick a goal in the first quarter, I thought we started well. I think we had 14-7 inside 50’s in the first quarter, but we just didn’t use the ball well”
We got a little bit of momentum in the second quarter and kicked a couple of goals in a row from stoppages which was pleasing.”
Lamont highlighted Werribee’s defence as a major positive coming out the game, after they kept the Roosters to just one goal in the second half, and that goal came from a 50m penalty to Liam Anthony midway through the last quarter.
“That was pleasing because we don’t want to be easy to score against”
The Tigers brought an extended squad into the game fielding several reserves players, meaning seven players were substituted in and out of the game at half-time, which gave Lamont the chance to have a look at some of the development players.
“You’d like to think with seven fresh guys coming on you’d get a hold of the opposition and we did” It was definitely a planned thing for players to get a taste of the system and the organisation of how we play.”
For the Tigers, Levi Greenwood (30 disposals), Jarred Moore (29) and Jesse Crichton (21) had plenty of the footy, with Crichton particularly impressive floating across half-back according to his coach.
“He is going to be a good addition for us. He has had four years on Fremantle’s list and more importantly four years under Ross Lyon, so he understands the defensive principles that we are looking for, because we want to defend the same way. He is a great personality around the club.”
Mason Wood (22 disposals, 2 goals) was also solid for the Tigers, Kayne Turner and Josh Porter chimed in with two goals each.
The Tigers final practice match is against Sandringham next Saturday at Moorabbin. Development at 11am Seniors 2pm.
