WHO WILL PREVAIL IN THIS YEAR'S BEST AND FAIREST COUNT?
By Tristan Foenander
Just who will take home the Bruce Montgomery Trophy as the club's Best and Fairest player? It's a question many people around the club ponder once the season ends.
With Presentation Night coming up on Friday October 6th at Grand Star Receptions, I thought I'd take a look at those players who are considered by many to be right in the mix. The race will definitely be hot and the count is sure to come right down to the wire.
*Players are listed in alphabetical order according to surname.
JIMMY ALLAN - Jimmy started the season in scintillating fashion and at one stage was leading the Liston Trophy count. His season was cut short due to an unfortunate arm injury that required extensive surgery. Missing the second half of the year might see him fall short of the mark, as the count generally rewards players who have played the majority of games. He was named in the VFL Team of the Year.
ROBBIE CASTELLO - A much improved player this year, Robbie began the season playing very consistent football. It was not until the later part of the season, however, that Robbie really thrived. Filling roles both in the forward line and down back, Robbie played great football. I'll be watching for a late surge from him.
TEGHAN HENDERSON - The club's Mr Versatile. `Hendos' ability to play in any position will greatly enhance his chances. Always a solid contributor, the coaches can rely on him to fulfil any role asked of him. He is sure to be thereabouts.
KIERAN MCGUINNESS - Kieran had a very consistent season of football. His good form throughout earnt him stints in the Western Bulldogs line up. Another utility, Kieran was regularly a prominent contributor and is sure to feature prominently.
JAMES PODSIADLY - Last year's winner, Podsy backed up last season's good form with another strong season. The club's leading goal kicker with 70 goals, he again was a commanding presence on the ground. He was named in the VFL Team of the Year.
TRAVIS ROBERTSON - After a quiet start to the year by his standards, `Robbo' finished the season playing some great football in the back half. A player who will always wear his opponent like a glove, `Robbo' frustrated many an opponent. After 135 games with the club, he decided to retire from VFL football at the end of the season. There would be no better way for him to leave the club than with a fourth Best and Fairest.
BRETT ROBINSON - A product of the Tasmanian youth program, Brett `Junior' Robinson came to the club with big raps at the start of the season. And he didn't disappoint. An in-and-under midfielder, his influence around the stoppages could never be underestimated. He enjoyed a consistent season and is sure to figure prominently.
JARROD YOUNG - With only a handful of senior games under his belt before the start of the year, `Youngy' really stepped up this year. He often frustrated opposition midfielders with his tight-marking and earnt the praise of his coaches on many occasions. And, if you can fill your role in the team as the coaches ask, as `Youngy' did, you're well on your way to success. It will be interesting to see how he polls.
