Match report by Daniel Paproth
WERRIBEE suffered a blow to its finals hopes going down by 37 points to a rampaging Coburg Tigers, Teghan Henderson’s 100th game not enough to ignite a victory.
The loss leaves Werribee in tenth place and the reality, that more wins and a significant percentage boost is needed to make its mark on the top eight.
It was a gallant effort considering Werribee had only five Kangaroos players in the team, having lost Leigh Brown, Ben Davies and Scott Thompson to the seniors, compared with Coburg’s 14 Richmond players.
Werribee was not without its chances in the game and arguably lost the match after an uninspiring first-quarter performance. Coburg, renowned for its starts this year, booted seven goals to Werribee’s one.
Coburg’s ball-winners were unstoppable and the back six constantly repelling any Werribee venture inside 50. Jack Riewoldt and Cleve Hughes were presenting well up forward and finished with 5 goals each.
Werribee was able to stem the flow in the second term, eventually winning the quarter to bring them back into the game, pleasing coach Simon Atkins.
"We were no good in the first quarter, they really came out hard, but I was really happy with our second quarter, and that’s the type of footy we have to play to beat teams like Coburg."
Werribee kicked four goals to two in the second term to really give the Tigers some hope at the half-time break, playing better, more attacking football, but again it was little skill errors which were costing the Tigers, a problem Rob Castello touched on after the game.
"We all battled pretty hard, but our skill errors cost us in the end, it was a bit disappointing obviously with Hendo’s [Teghan Henderson] 100th we couldn’t get over the line for him.
"I don’t doubt anyone’s effort out there, we fight on as hard as we can, there’s just a couple of simple errors which we have got to fix up."
Despite a flurry of quick goals in the final term it was a case of too little, too late for Werribee, who attempted to stamp themselves on their opponents, with some fierce tackling in the final term, with Flinn Chisholm, Jarrod Young and Dom Gleeson laying 21 tackles between them, a factor which Atkins has been important all year.
"We’ve been getting fifty plus tackles a game, and every bloke knows that’s a part of our game, it’s good to put pressure on the opposition that way."
Werribee faces the winless Box Hill Hawks next week in a must-win game, with the top eight slowly beginning to consolidate.
