Women

The Lightning women have held top spot with a thrilling last second win over the 2nd placed Uni Rebels 66-63. With the scores tied at 63-63 Lightning had the ball on the attacking baseline with four seconds remaining, Tamara Sheppard took the final shot from well behind the three point line with one second remaining and hit nothing but net to win the game. The Uni Rebels took a 14 point lead in the third quarter and looked set to take back over the top spot on the ladder but Lightning dug deep to fight their way back into the game. Tamara Sheppard led Lightning scorers with 20, while Claire O’Bryan chipped in with 18. For the Rebels Jaylene Bonson again led the way with 23 points and had strong support from Desley Ah Wang with 16. Lightning will now have the weekend off while the Rebels will look to get back on track with a win against the Warriors after two straight loses.

Razzle have joined the Uni Rebels in equal second after a hard fought 72-62 win over the TV Jets. Razzle led for the majority of the game but were put under pressure early in the 4th quarter when the TV Jets fought back to be within 2 points, however some clutch fourth quarter plays from NZ Olympian Kate McMeeken-Ruscoe (11 of a game high 36 scored in the fourth) helped Razzle hold on down the stretch. Keisha Tinley was also instrumental in the win for Razzle with 19 points. For the TV Jets Jess Eason was again the standout player scoring 24 points to go along with numerous rebounds. Desiree Weetra also contributed 10 points. The TV Jets will look for their second win of the season against Ansett next week while Razzle will face a big game up against the resurgent Eagles.

The Eagles have continued their improved recent form and have surged into a tie for fourth spot with a solid 64-53 win over the Warriors. The win was set-up on the back of some strong offense in the second and third quarters where they outscored the Warriors 47-29. Megan Reeve was again the Eagles top scorer with 16 points and received ample support from Patricia Graham (13) and Katherine Hollis (10). For the Warriors Tara Carroll was dominant with 26 points (all coming from two point field goals) while Tahnee Bettess scored 10. The Eagles have a chance to again move up the ladder on Saturday night when they face off against the third placed Razzle women, while the Warriors are scheduled to meet the second placed Uni Rebels.

Men

TV Jets have cruised to a 99-63 victory over Razzle to remain in second spot on the ladder. Despite missing four regular players the Jets were too good for Razzle who are still searching for their first win of the season. Matt Fagg had his best game of the season with 33 points and junior Dan East was also a standout with 25 points (including 16 in the second half). Razzle again fought hard and are no doubt improving and getting closer to a win. Kyle Webb as always fought hard inside and scored 16 while season debutant Ryan Barnes scored 14. Razzle will face off against the Eagles this Saturday while the TV Jets will match-up against Ansett.

Eagles have shown some strong spirit late to keep their season hopes alive by pulling off some what of an upset 90-78 over the Warriors. The Warriors missing star recruit and leading point scorer Bayi Handy (averaging 33 points per game) held a seven point advantage at the final change. However, the Eagles with their season on the line managed to dig deep to take the lead and run away to a 12 point victory. Timmy Duggan (29 points) and Joseph Johnson (27 points, including 10 free throws) were nearly unstoppable in the fourth quarter as they combined for 25 of the Eagles 32 points. Daniel Reid also signalled a return back to form with 21 points. For the Warriors Leon Purdue had one of his best games of the season hitting 24 points including six treys and Leon Shulz pitched in with 17 (9 in the third). Things won’t get any easier for the Warriors who are trying to hold on to their playoff spot as they face the League Leading Uni Rebels next week, while the Eagles will look to begin some sort of streak against Razzle.

Uni Rebels have extended their streak to eight wins in a row with a comfortable 112-83 win over the third placed Lightning. The Rebels had four players who managed to score 20+ points as they combined for 100 of the team 112 points; Nick Freer (35, including some monster dunks), Marcus Ch’ng (23), Jarrod Sheppard (22) and Joshua cohen (20). For Lightning while they continued their strong offense scoring output they couldn’t stay with the rebels after the first quarter (26-30). Mark Llyod led the scorers for the Lightning with 19 and Karsten Oltrop scored 13. The Uni Rebels will look to make it nine straight against the Warriors while Lightning have the bye.
