League Women Round 15 – Palmerston v Ansett

Ansett caused a minor upset with a victory against Palmerston 39-34. The Blues won only their second game of the season, but it was a big one over the third placed Power. Clancy Dorman hit double figures for the Blues with 10 and 6 of them came in the crucial last quarter when the game was on the line. Dorman hit the last two buckets for the Blues to seal the win. The game was tight for the duration with the Power always in with a chance, but with all Blues players adding to the score-line Ansett managed to hang on to the lead for the win. Brielle Felton and Jennifer Kinsella top scored for the Power with 10 each.

Tracy Village Jets v Lightning

The League leading Tracy Village Jets swept aside the Lightning in dominant fashion winning the contest easily 68-29. Abby Cubillo cut through the Lightning defense to knock down a game and team high 22 points with team mates Erin Geer (19) & Tania Dhu (13) keeping the Lightning defense hopping when Cubillo wasn’t firing. The Bombers limited the Lightning to just one lone point in the first quarter, indicating their intentions regarding the outcome of the game. Bonnie Illingworth & Kira Pendlebury gave it their best shot for the Lightning, hitting 7 apiece, but it was never going to be enough to overhaul the high flying Bombers.

Eagles v Uni Rebels

The Uni Rebels pushed their winning streak out to six in a row with a polished display against the Eagles 68-40. Jaylene Bonson and Justine Schmidt led the Rebels to a 12-8 first quarter break and the team powered on from there, adding to the tally as the game progressed and never giving the Eagles an opportunity to catch up. Bonson led all scorers with 19 while Kahlisha Rioli (14) and Tamara Sheppard (12) lent support. For the Eagles it was Lillian Williams and Michelle Friel again leading from the front with 17 and 12.

League Men – Ansett v Uni Rebels

Ansett pulled their derailed train back up on to the tracks just in time to put a halt to the Uni Rebel win streak with an overpowering 100-57 win that sent a statement to the rest of the League. The Blues aren’t going to fold up just because a few of their team mates have moved on. USA recruit Matt Van Pelt is finding form and the likes of Jake Feeney, Tom Hunt and Co. are stepping up as the Blues make another run at the title. The Blues made sure the Rebels John King had a night not to remember. The League’s leading scorer (29ppg) was held to just 8pts in the encounter, leaving the bulk of the Rebel scoring to Tim Morris who hit a game high 34. The Blues on the other hand had six players in double figures with Van Pelt leading the way with 24, Hunt with 23, Feeney 16 and Matteo Rowse & Mitchell O’Donoghue on 11 each. The Blues waxed the Rebels 31-14 in the first quarter and the route was on. The Rebels managed to win one quarter, the third, with a 22-21 run, but it was way too late as the Blues finished off the game very strong to secure the points.

Palmerston v Eagles

In another tough encounter between the Eagles and Palmerston the Eagles wound up winning 73-60 to solidify their third placing on the ladder. In a high scoring first quarter the Eagles came out on top with a two point lead at 25-23. For entertainment value the second quarter was non-offensive with both teams only hitting 8 points. It wasn’t until the last quarter when the Birds lifted behind the shooting of James Silvie, Justin McKey and Chris Stewart to fly over the Power with a 23-16 run to record the victory. Silvie led all scorers with 27, McKey had 12 and Stewart 10 for the Eagles, while Bradley Jachmann put up 16 and Braden Robertson hit 12 for the Power.

Lightning v Razzle

The League leading Lightning pummeled Razzle to the tune of 100-33. The seriously undermanned green and gold lacked in the firepower position and never looked like challenging the Lightning at any stage. Held to just one point in the first quarter the Razzle only hit double figures in the last quarter whereas the Lightning were scoring at will. Thomas Godwin led the winners with 22 points while Henry Fuge had 17, Shane Thorne 16, Cameron Bailey 14 and Karsten Oltrop 10. David Carroll & Alan Watson led the Razzle with 11 each.

Ladder after Round 15:                 Lightning 9-3, Ansett 8-3, Eagles 7-5, Uni Rebels 6-5, Palmerston 4-7,Tracy Village Jets 4-6 & Razzle 1-10
