Women

Uni Rebels have maintained their grip on first place with a strong fourth quarter effort (23-12) to run away with a 60-42 victory over the Eagles. Desley Ah Wang dominated for the Rebels with 17 points (five treys) who had all nine players reach the scoresheet. Christine Cooper led the Eagles with 12 but unlike last week they had a struggle trying to stop the Rebels from scoring late in the game.

Lightning women have put together a third big win in a row with the biggest winning margin of the season 80-31 over the TV Jets.  Lightning had many contributors in the win with Claire O’Bryan leading all scorers with 32 and Tamara Sheppard also contributing with 20. The Jets were only able to get one player in double digits with Desiree Weetra producing a solid 12 points.

Warriors have caused what many may be the upset of the season by not only beating by convincingly beating Ansett 63-42. Ansett had eight time WNBL defensive player of the year Emily McInerny suiting up but even her presence was not enough to stop a confident Warriors team from scoring 63 points, including a 21-10 second quarter to help set up the win. Tara Carroll returning back to the line-up was a big boost to the Warriors as she top scored with 17 points and was a factor on both ends of the court. The Warriors Peta Bailey also came up big with 15 points and four other girls contributed between secen and nine points. For Ansett again Sam Drescher was the only one to really test the scoreboard with 23 points, while Emily McInerny failed to even score a basket.

Men

After a game off with the bye the TV Jets have bounced back with a 93-75 win over Lightning to remain equal top of the ladder with just one loss. Travis Ellis was unstoppable all night on his way to 28 and was one of five Jets to score 10 or more points. For Lightning, Tom Leonard led the way with an impressive 31 points but failed to score in the all important third quarter in which Lightning were outscored 16-6.

Uni Rebels have held there position at the top of the ladder with an unexpected tight win 92-89 against the previously out of sync Eagles. Both teams had it going on the offensive end and the Uni Rebels held on a late rally to win by three. For the Rebels Nick Freer scored 30, making it five weeks in a row with 30 or more points and Jarrod Sheppard continued with his return to form with 29, including six threes. For the Eagles Timmy Duggan dug deep in the 4th quarter to start a big rally which eventually fell just short with 19 of his 35 total points scored in the period, including five massive three pointers.

Bayi Handy who stated before the game he was ready for a “big game” and declared the Warriors would bounce back from Saturdays loss, exploded early scoring 27 of his total of 41 in the first half. On the back of Handy and 13 points from Leon Purdue and John Culbertson the Warriors got held the lead all the way to beat Ansett 79-64. To Ansett’s credit they hung in the game and made numerous runs thanks to some strong play on the inside but too many unnecessary turnovers would prove critical down the stretch. Ross Vasic led the scoring for Ansett with 21 points and received strong support from Michael Crawford (13) and Arjen Smit (11).
