Round 7 v Southern

Round 7 Match Reports: Southern Cross Strikers v Southern Blue Tongues

U13 Boys

Out scored but not out played. The U13 boys played a very well structured game today holding their position well and communication on the ground was key.

The main focus for this game was holding and passing the ball which the boys did very well. Across the back line Alex, Mitch,  Daniel and Jesse work the ball out well with Will and Brandon very solid in the midfield. Up forward Marcus was very composed holding and passing the ball with precision but the opposition defended very well. The first goal  was scored by the SBT 22 minutes into the first half. Half time score SCS 0 - SBT 1.

The second half again was a display of some good soccer with both teams moving the ball quickly and putting both defences under pressure. SCS unlucky not to score the on numerous occasions resulted in a final score of SCS 0 - SBT 3.

U13 Girls

A very exciting and action packed game saw the girls carry their half time score of 1 -0 through to the end of the game to walk away with a very satisfying win against a strong opposition.

U14 Boys

This team were the talk of the town on Sunday after inflicting a solid, but fingernail biting, defeat to the highly fancied Southern Blue Tongues team. There were stars performing in every position on the field to get an early lead and then defend a fast finishing opposition. The final score was a win to the Strikers 4 -3.

U15 Boys

On Sunday, the Southern Cross Strikers were matched against the in form Southern Blue Tongues. The Blue Tongues started off solidly against the Strikers with some talented forwards testing the Strikers defenders. A mostly even matched first half saw the Strikers down 2 goals to nil at half time. Once again, the second half saw both teams playing some excellent football, however the luck on the scoreboard continued to go with the Blue Tongues with a final scoreline of 5 nil. Next weekend, the Southern Cross Strikers will be involved in a double header in Bendigo against Central City and North East Diamonds.

U15 Girls

This squad came up against a very determined and strategic Southern Blue Tongues who were prepared to do whatever it took to walk away with as big a win as they could get. The girls battled all game and put a proud effort in but unfortunately were beaten 9-1. The girls should be congratulated for their efforts to stick with the game plan even under undue pressure. Well done girls.

U17 Girls

A quite massive and very physical opposition confronted the U17 Girls, however they had a good scoring opportunity straight after the kickoff through Lulu.

A highlight of the half was when Jordan ran down a defender and stole the ball and set up a corner. The girls had the majority of the play in first 25 minutes. Courtney stole a ball and sent a ball through to Maddy who unfortunately rebounded it off the upright.

Unfortunately, against the play Southern managed to score a goal.

In the 2nd half, a strong attack by Imogen Grant almost a ended in a goal and Rob (father) leaped for joy for the second time in the weekend.

A strong, determined attack by Courtney resulted in a deflection that was superbly finished by Lulu. A fitting gift for Lulu’s last game. An open run towards goal by a Blue Tongues striker was shut down skillfully by Justine and a great save by Mina in goals stopped a strong shot.

The ball was played from one end to the next with defenders working hard to provide an exciting end to the game at 1 all.

The success of the girls on the day was enhanced by the addition of three U15 girls, Imogen, Vanessa and Natalie. Well done girls.

U17 Boys

The U17 Boys provided a strong, enthralling game against a big, quality opposition who got off to an early start. The boys would not give up though and provided some scary times for the Blue Tongues team towards the end of the first half and for the majority of the second half. Unfortunately, luck was not with the boys today with a number of shots that didn’t quite register and a number of “interesting” decisions that tended to not go in the Strikers favour. It might be “the one that got away”, however the boys should be proud that they can more than match it with the top team in the VCL. Well done, despite the 1-3 loss.
