Penrith Rams again hit the road on Saturday with the Ramettes taking on Camden Cats at Harrington Park, whilst the men’s teams head to Gipps Road, Greystanes to play Parramatta Goannas in both grades. With a couple of major milestones, another windy day under mostly clear skies is predicted in round six of the nine game season.
Ramettes V Camden Cats – Fairfax Reserve, Harrington Park 10:10 AM
A tough encounter is expected with 4th placed Penrith Ramettes take on 2nd placed Camden Cats. The last clash of these two combatants saw the Ramettes secure a 10-point victory at Fairfax last August. With the Penrith side securing consecutive wins over the last fortnight in a hotly contested 2020 season, they are looking to continue their year with the finals looming in a month’s time. Against Camden, who are proving to be the “Jewel in the Crown” of the Cat’s teams
Reserve Grade V Parramatta Goanna’s- Gipps Rd, Greystanes 1:30 PM
Competition frontrunners, Penrith Rams open the men’s campaign where they play 3rd placed Parramatta at Gipps Rd. After a big 121 point victory last week against South West Sydney, a much tougher encounter is expected against the Goanna’s, who after a close loss to Macquarie University bounced back last week to defeat Balmain Tigers by 15 points and put them in finals contention.
Since the commencement of the Platinum Division competition, Penrith secured victory in five of their six encounters.
Bryce Roney makes his eagerly awaited 100th game for the Rams on Saturday. The dual premiership player returned to footy this after a five-year hiatus and will be looking to make the match a memorable one.
First Grade V Parramatta Goannas – Gipps Rd, Greystanes 3:20 PM
The final match of the round sees second placed Penrith take on sixth placed Goannas in the “yellow ball” local derby. After a training interrupted week, the Rams overcame South West Sydney Magpies by 57 points last Saturday at Rosedale Oval to progress to second spot on the ladder, whilst the Goannas crashed to an 18-goal drubbing by Balmain.
The Rams have won all six matches against the Goannas since the inception of the Platinum Competition, However, in their first 2019 clash in April at Greygums, the Parramatta outfit gave a huge scare leading by four goals coming into the final quarter only to see Penrith storm home to take victory by a single point and coach Kirk will not be under-estimating their chances at their home ground.
Colourful Penrith identity, Tom McNamara, celebrates his 100th match for the club, 99 in the top grade. Tom first played for Penrith back in 2008, before heading to East Coast for a couple of seasons, playing 23 matches. He returned back to the flock in 2013 and was a member of the premiership winning team in 2018, before injury marred his 2019 season. Tom joins his brother Max (102 games) in the elite “100 club” whilst younger brother, Jack, lines up for his 150th AFL match, but only his 31st in senior footy, after a nine-year junior career.
Supporters are invited to attend all games, keeping in mind Covid-19 protocols.
