NOOSA AFC INC.
COACHES REPORT – 3RD DIVISION 2011
Our 2011 season began late in 2010 with a lot of the players from 2008 and 2009 showing interest to return after a season off. All summer was spent recruiting and retaining players from past seasons, which meant we had a healthy list for the season start in April. Thank you to Kris Bamback and Brereton Kay for helping with this. With most of the young players from 2010 returning with the mix of players from earlier seasons, we were confident of making an impact on the competition
Although our numbers were good throughout the pre-season, we found it hard each week with a consistent 22 once the season started; due to work and family commitments. All up we played 52 different players for the year, but it wasn’t until mid-season that we had commitment from all to making the finals. A lesson I hope has not been lost for 2012.
Our opening 6 games were competitive but disappointing off the back of a solid pre-season - especially losing 2 in a row by only 2 points. This saw us in the unusual position after round 6 sitting on the bottom of the ladder with a top 3 percentage. Being a team relatively new, we knew that we were close to turning things around and with the inclusion of Rob McIldowie, Sam Taylor, Ray Brown, Marty Boehm and Damien Reichman the change came.
Round 7 saw us travel to Gympie confident of our first win which came by 10 goals. Reward long overdue for the hard work put in. The following week took us on the road again to this year’s grand finalists Pine Rivers, to be narrowly defeated by only 10 points, compounded by losing one of our best for the season Brad Herberte with a horrific knee injury that resulted in an ambulance trip to hospital.
With 6 games to go still with a good percentage we were still a chance at finals but we were in the position of having to win each game. Although we did well with wins by 25 goals, 8 goals, 5 goals and finishing the season with a 14 goal win we fell just short of the top 4. Left with a feeling of missed opportunities the boys have already committed to taking a step forward in 2012.
Congratulations to Kris Bamback on second in the League goal kicking with 38 goals, a great effort considering he spent a month in Dubai during the season with work commitments.
3rd Division having to supply boundary, goal umpires, time keeper along with runner and water boys; it is a big effort to take the field each week so thank you to all who helped throughout the year and also to those players who rotated to give everyone a go. Special thanks to Ray Brown, Jezza Watts and Chris Cameron for their efforts throughout the season. Also to Fletch who was busy enough throughout the year with seniors, but would go out of his way each week giving me every assistance and mentoring.
Thank you to our sponsors Rococo, Stratogen, Millard Motors, Fit Noosa, Noosa Box Office, MOX, Richardson & Wrench, Zachary’s, Eat Me, By The Rules Conveyancing.
My final thanks go to Ash, the committee and players for allowing me to coach in 2011. Apprehensive at first, as having never coached before, it was an opportunity I’m thankful for, with many great friendships made.
