David Lappage and Matthew Lloyd launched the Haileybury School Football season in syle in front of 150 players, parents and friends at Fisher oval Keysborough on Wednesday evening. Lappa outlined what an honour it is to pull on a magenta and black jumper and the responsibility that goes with it. Matthew LLoyd backed him up as did two Haileyburians who have been drafted in recent years - Lewis Pierce (St Kilda) and Nathan Freeman (Collingwood).
Matthew Lloyd spoke to the players about respecting the jumper, playing as a team and giving it everything you have personally. He spoke on how the players can learn to be successful both academically and at football - that it is a matter of applying yourself to both aspects of your life. He felt the team was bonding together well and we fitter than in the past.
Matthew Lloyd then interviewed Lewis Pierce and Nathan Freeman extracting comments from each about how they had found life at an AFL club. Both had the chance to learn from the professionalism of their respective senior players. Both commented on their fond recent memories of playing in the Magenta and Black.
Matthew Lloyd then interviewed Tony Elshaug who is the recruiting manager at St Kilda. He spoke of the qualities that they look for and its not all just football skills. He also commented that St Kilda and some other teams have tallent spotters allocated to APS games. The last game in 2013 Haileybury V Brighton had 5 players from that game drafted this year.
Lappa also pointed out to parents and players that not everyone will get drafted but there is an excellent opportunity to play quality football in the Magenta and Black with Old Haileybury. He pointed out that Old Haileybury play in the VAFA which is the highest ranked league outside the AFL and VFL in Victoria.
Lappa closed by pointing out the close relationship between Haileybury School Football and Old Haileybury and that 2 of Old Haileybury's major sponsors - Astoria Honda and Buxton Real Estate at Hampton East are owned by parents of current Haileybury students. He asked all the Haileybury Football community to support those who support Haileybury Football.
