T H King reserve in Glen Iris resembled a building site with a new club rooms being built and the use of temporary change rooms and a tent for club rooms. However the surface of the ground has been improved and although it was slippery it was in very good condition. The new score board was good - something like what we can look forward to.
However it was St Kevins who started like a house on fire and it looked like we were again starting slowly. We managed a couple of goals at the end of the quarter and at qtr time just down by a couple kicking against the wind. The second quarter was one of our least productive and we let them kick 3 to our 2 despite us kicking with a 2 goal wind. It rained quite heavily through the quarter and the ground had become very slippery.
The third quarter was wet and St Kevins gave us a wet weather football lesson which would have been reflected on the scoreboard except for some excellent work by our last line of defence.
The last quarter was more of the same conditions - wet weather, slippery conditions and St kevins kicking 4.1 to our 3.6. We were improving though and had we been a bit more confident and poised we might have made a game of it as the 9 shots to 5 indicates.
There were some positives - good performances by some of our younger players Armstrong and Paul, we kept on fighting on late in each quarter, Chis got through his first game for 3 years and we might have learned how to play football in slippery conditions.
The reserves we well beaten by a slick St kevins side but improved as the day went on and it was a good effort from Verway, Dalton and Woltering.
The 3rds did manage to put together a team but were also outclassed.
The Under 19s were the highlight of the day with a resounding win against Collegians at home who had already won a couple of games this season. This was our first win but wont be our last. Collegians kicked with the wind in the first qtr and lead by 3 goals at the first break. However we managed to be 14 points ahead by half time despite inaccurate kicking. By three qtr time our lead had been whittled back to 10 points. But we kicked away in the last kicking 4.5 to 1 point to win by 38 points. Could have been more with better accuracy - particularly with the wind.
Haileybury 1st XVIII were soundly beaten by a pretty good Geelong Grammar team despite playing at Keysborough.
