Beaten by a better team on the day – or was the result a fair reflection of
our abilities at this point?
No doubt we had hoped for a different result but that seemed unlikely from our first
defensive efforts. Whitsunday were faster, strong & cleaner at the ball all day and increased their control of the game at every turn. Sure, we had some players that showed some fight but there was too few too often. In spite of some individual efforts it was just
a better team effort that won the day.
For now we have to put our cue in the rack and get behind the reserves team in the upcoming grand final this week. The two’s have a good solid team and are more than capable than winning this week. We have a good mixture of youth & experience and can kick a winning score. Our win over the Hawks in the 2nd semi final will give our boys increased confidence and the knowledge that they can win. We Saints were the last club to nail the seniors & reserves double, so beating the Hawks in the reserves will ensure that goal stays out of reach for the Hawks.
Season’s end is the time to thank all involved in running the club. So to all the support people in the background – thank you. To all on the coaching staff, well done on a near impossible job. Week after week, countless phone calls to all and sundry to make sure training numbers were up, medical staff available, goal umpires organised, canteen staff, too many to mention. The committee also deserves a big thank you for their ongoing efforts. Too many people don’t recognise that the committee does not stop at September. Remember they work for your club 12 mths of the year, so help out when you can.
We have had a good year with our junior committee taking shape & taking the load off the general committee. The canteen has also benefited from the involvement of more volunteers. We hope that these people & more will be around for many years to come & help the club grow.
Getting back to last week’s game our best players were Nick Billing, Ryno, Cowcher, Lemmy & Quinny.
Congrats to Smithy on winning the reserves goal kicking and to Timmy for his result in the MJ Miller medal.
Congrats to Des Hayes on his win in the MJ Miller.
Finally, thanks to the umpires for their efforts during the season. Yes, we love to hate you but without you there is no game. Can’t live with’em - pass the peanuts . .
North Mackay can also look forward to seeing some champion Saints of the future in action on Grand Final day, with our U/13 team in the big one. The boys are undefeated so far this year but as we know from last year, that sometimes doesn’t mean much. So keep you heads until the job is done.
Last word, GO SAINTS, bring home a couple of flags!!
