Round 9
And it was off to Rogers’s oval to Vs the Swans on their home turf. The reserves were a little undermanned with a few regulars unavailable but were able to Russel up a team. In very hot conditions and after an even first quarter the hawks were able to hold onto their lead but not after withstanding a number of swan’s challenges throughout the match. Downsey had a hard job trying to pick best players with an all-round team performance. Major goal kickers were Matty Stephens and new player Adam Lock with 3 each. Kyle Archer up from the under 18's and playing off half back was the Hawks best while Adam Lock, Matty Stephens up forward were able to keep the scoreboard ticking over. Mark Nicolson and former player in his first game for a number of years Ben Davis were very good through the midfield. A win to the Hawks by 38 points.
The seniors were up against a swan’s team that had beaten top Side Moranbah the previous week. It was an important game for the Hawks to cement themselves in the top 2 and the double chance come finals time. The started at a ferocious pace with slick ball movement from both teams. The Hawks hard running and straight goal kicking allowed them to gain control of the game the longer the first quarter went. At Quarter time it was 9 goals to 3, the hawk’s best opening quarter of the year. The start of the second quarter saw the swans take control before the Hawks finished the stronger just before half-time and a lead of 60 points. In the second half it was the Hawks 13 goals to 4 to finish 100 point victors. Coach Johnno was rapt and described the game as the Hawks the best for the year. All players played there role in a super team effort with best players very hard to pick. Desy Hayes played a blinder through the midfield, Mark Berts in his return kicked 7 from the Half Forward line, Shaun Bates in the centre was consistent as usual, and Josh Donovan kicked 8 at Full Forward and took some great grabs while Mick Polkinghorne played well on a wing. Jason Garrett also had a super game across half forward and swapping through the midfield.
