Eric Johns Cup
Its Eric Johns cup day this weekend where the Swans and Tigers square off in all age groups to battle it out for the Eric Johns Cup.
The annual clash between the two neighboring rivals is named after Eric Johns and is considered to be the most important day on the football colander of both clubs outside a Grand Final.
Eric Johns started his playing career with Hermit Park Tigers in 1961.
In his time with Hermit Park from 1962 to 1968 he played in 2 A Grade Grand Finals both as Vice Capt. Losing in ’66 and winning in ’67.
Eric played 109 games with Hermit Park and was awarded Life Membership.
In 1962 he was awarded the Townsville Aust. Football Leagues’ TJ Williams Best and Fairest Award and the Townsville Football League Most Improved Trophy.
Eric transferred to the Currajong Football Club in 1968 as playing coach and played 64 games until he retired in 1972 to concentrate on administration.
Eric was to hold the President’s job at Currajong for 11 years where he was awarded Life Membership for his service to the club.
He saw Currajong win 6 pennants from appearances in every grand final from 1973 to 1980.
When the Curra Swans became a reality Eric served as President of that club.
He was President of the Townsville League for many seasons.
Eric served as Townsville Australian Football League’s Tribunal Chairman.
Eric also served on the North Queensland Football Association for many years where he held the position of Vice President.
In 1990 Eric was awarded the National Football Council’s prestigious Merit Award.
Eric was a life member of the following organisations.

North Queensland Football Association.

Currajong Football Club (Curra Swans Football Club)
