U17s Add To Their Honours

They already have the Townsville crown, but the Curra Swans
under-17 team reckon they can probably lay claim to being the kings of North Queensland AFL as well.
During their end-of-season trip, the Swans travelled to Cairns
to battle AFL Cairns under-18s champions the Manunda Hawks and ran out shock
10-point victors.
They won 9.13 (67) to 9.3 (57), handling the tough, windy
conditions expertly.
With Cairns
generally regarded as having a far more powerful AFL competition than their
Townsville counterparts it was a major fillip for the local team.
Curra team manager Steve Sim said it was an outstanding
effort.
We expected the guys to have a good showing, they went out
there very determined to do well and they were ecstatic that they had won, he
said.
Cairns have a bigger player pool than us and they were much
taller than us, but our guys were fairly tenacious and played hard at the ball.
They played fair and both teams did what the umpires told
them.
Sim singled out half forward Khyle Goodman as the stand-out
of the game.
He was everywhere, taking strong marks and playing hard for
the ball, he said.
The game was such a success that there has been talk of the
clash - Townsville premiers versus Cairns
premiers - becoming an annual event, alternating between the cities.
