The Bear squatted down on his furry behind to watch the first game of the season Ressy’s v Lions.
A new season, new hopes, you beauty. So what happened?
Well we tried hard, nobody was out there not wanting to win. We were at the ball, so were the great pretenders, the Lions. Why great pretenders? Well until the league makes them once again field a senior side we will not really know how good they are!
Our kicking in general was not good, we were winning ball and then turning it over with poor skills. First game, this will improve, it will need to.
There were some exceptions.
Bambi was good all over the ground as was Matho and Foxy junior was one of the exceptions with nice penetrating kicks.
Plugga is a small fellow but plays with a big heart.
Ando was getting heaps of ball but some of his kicks went so high they nearly bought rain, admittingly several were under pressure.
Ben Morris tried hard and the Bear saw flashes of the Reece he knew.
Liam H rebounded well at times, Sticks ran around like a lighted redhead match and most of the others had their moments.
It is early days and the Bear looking at the coach JB who aged as the game went on can already see some grey hairs coming out but that as we all know is footy.
The Bear thinks there is better days ahead.
Seniors v Bulldogs.
Settling back after the Ressy’s with the worst packet of hot chips he had ever had and no Pepsi Max the Bear was already starting to growl.
The new look seniors came out, could this be the night?
Well!
By half time with a score line of Bulldogs 5-5 to Curra 4-2 the Bear had forgotten the crook tucker and was engrossed in the game.
The Swannies were every bit as good as the Dogs in the first half and were winning their fair share of the pill.
With as many inside fifties as the opposition and many opportunities it was all looking good.
After half time it was business as usual for the Dogs and business as usual for the Swans.
We run out of puff towards the end and at times it looked to the Bear as if the lack of training under lights showed.
Doyly was coaching in the absence of Youngy and this put a huge strain on him.
In today’s game it just shows how hard it is for a playing coach.
Through out the game the smallest man on the ground showed us what a good footballer he is. Adam Ant was every where and took some big knocks, got up each time and carried on.
All three of the Hill brothers were having good games in defence but after half time when the ball came in more often than the Germans during the blitzkrieg they struggled under the barrage.
David started well on his wing and faded as the game went on.
Clarky to the Bear’s way of thinking was good all day, not the prettiest of footballers but doesn’t know how to say die.
Ben Graham in his first game and playing the hardest position on the ground showed he will be okay. Piggy showed flashes as did Matt Palmer another new kid on the block, Max Tink weaved in and out.
Whisky to Bear’s way of thinking is a bit wasted down forward and is always targeted by the opposition but of course the Bear is not the coach.
Gordo on the wing and Doctor Tim on the other showed they will be better with the run under their belts.
Big D tried hard as he always does in ruck and Massa another first gamer showed some glimpses of form.
And perhaps that was the problem we had every player showed glimpses but in the second half all too few.
Fatigue a factor, playing under lights a factor, inconsistency a factor but not excuses.
We will need to work hard to get lights at the oval for the seniors to train under.
Chalk the first game down to a good hit out and lets all move forward.
These comments are the personal comments of the Bear and not those of management.
