Round 8 of the AFL Premiership on the week end of the 13th to the 15th of May has been ear marked as the “THANKS UMP” Round
The weekend is a unique time for all coaches, umpires, players, supporters and spectators to join together to influence and create a positive match day environment in their local area.
There are two main activities that we request all clubs to perform.
1. All Umpires, players and coaches and spectators show support for the campaign by placing green tape on their right arm or around their boots during all matches played on that week end.
2. Players, coaches and support staff line up prior to each game that they play on that week end and shake the umpires hands. The attached media plan contains a script for the ground announcer to use for the purpose
Both these activities take some time and effort to organise and I appreciate any assistance that the club volunteers and staff can provide.
The battle for the hearts and minds of the community requires a large cultural change and campaigns like the “THANKS UMP” Round go a long way to develop awareness and understanding of the problem.
I encourage all participants in the match day environment to get involved. Small changes at a community level can make the environment a better place not only for umpires but all people either current or new to AFL
