“THE BEAR FACTS”
ROUND 11 MATCH REPORTS FROM “THE BEAR”
A special day with the Hawks and Swans combining to present a game to help the fight against Cancer.A great concept and with more planning next season should be big on the playing program.
Reserves
The Bear watched the Ressies to see what would be produced. The Bear caught a glimpse of Big Les on the field and it wasn’t long before he was back in form after two or three years letting the umps know what was going on. A scrambly game in windy conditions and the first quarter was an arm wrestle. The Hawks managed 1-3 and the Swans 1 point. Geez thought the Bear where is this going. The second quarter suddenly was worth watching with both sides playing some positive footy and piling on four sausage rolls each. Hawks 5-3 to Swans 4-1 at half time and the Bear who had thought about having a quick snooze at quarter time was back interested. The wind seemed to be favouring the car park end, even though it was blowing across the ground straight into the Bear’s furry face. They say bad kicking loses games then if that’s true the third quarter was where we lost it, eight scoring shots for a one goal return told the story. The Hawks piled on four goals in the last stanza and it was all over. Best for the Swans in the Bear’s humble opinion was Jack Ryan who repelled many attacks and used the ball well. The coach kicked a nice goal, haven’t seen that often before and Johnny Belbin showed fire and willingness. All round a much better effort this week from the 2-s.
Seniors
The Bear sat in the lair straight after the game with a warm fuzzy glow. We had beaten the Hawks on The Fight against Cancer Day. The Bear’s beloved Swans had put together 4 quarters of gritty footy and produced the result. Again the wind was expected to play a part and whilst the Hawks tried hard and restricted the Swans it was still the Swans quarter. Strong games from Neilo and Maggot early who were in everything. The second quarter against the scoring end is where the Swans won the game, with good possession footy spreading well when in possession and playing in front (seems a simple formulae) we scored well and opened up a margin at half time that the Hawks could not breech. Leading the way and at last showing what a lot of us old timers knew he could produce was the Tink boy. This was the best game Max has played this year with good clearing kicks and most times finding a Swans player on his own he dominated across the halfback line. Nice to see all players contributing with the likes of the young blokes Trizza, Goody and Joel improving every game. It would be amiss of the Bear not to mention the blokes who played on Philip Burger, cut him out of the game and went along way to winning a close one. Blake when moved to the wing where he had the room was exciting cutting a swathe through the opposition. Crossy played well driving the Hawks out time and again and special mention to all the on-ballers who won the centre breaks convincingly. Topping the day off was the presence of John Platten, Margarey and Brownlow medalist. The Bear is glad to report no negatives and a lot of positives this week. Keep it up!!
