Last Saturday the U17 Curra Swans headed west to the goldfields to take on the Charters Towers Demons. The Demons facilities are exceptional, albeit the ground is a little hard under foot, similar to Tony Ireland Stadium.
Play eventually got under way with both sides fielding 16 players each. It was the experienced Swans though that dominated the play for most of the game. To the Demon’s credit they showed some promise by putting together some good passages of play, but not nearly enough finish to trouble the Swans on the scoreboard. Possession wins games and the Swans had plenty across the four quarters. Winning the ball out of the centre provides opportunities for the forwards to do their job and it was pleasing to watch the Swans centre line delivering from the majority of the bounce downs.
The Swans ran out easy winners on the day 30.15.195 to 3.5.23. Wes has the foundations of a good footy team up in the Towers, so we wish them well for next season when we are sure they will be a lot more competitive on the park.
This was the last game of the regular home and away season for the U17 Swans who finished the comp as minor premiers again for the second year running. The Swans recorded a 14-1 win/loss record for the year and are as keen now as they were at the beginning of the season. It was also the first game of the season to be coached by Glenn Faulds and the lads welcomed him back with a winning performance against the Demons. At least 12 of the current Swans squad of 21 experienced senior football throughout the year, the opportunity adding to their skill base and level of fitness.
Thank you to all who have assisted the U17 Swans team throughout the year, particularly Christine Roverts who tirelessly washed the playing strips every week. Thank you again to our team sponsor, Baulderstone, whose support has been appreciated this season, hopefully you will be back to sponsor the team and the club in 2010. Thank you to the U15 players who backed up when team numbers were low, and to the runners who kept the lads hydrated during each game. Thank you to the parents and supporters for cheering the lads on each week and we look forward to having you at the finals games to hopefully cheer the team on to another grand final win.
We also wish the other U17 teams in the competition the best of luck in the finals series.
U17 Coaching Staff.
