Nathan Wescombe has won the Swans Players Player Award for 2009 after all the votes were tallied at the tin shed at Muldoon Oval on Sunday.
Wescombe polled a total of 43 votes for the season and finished ahead of AFL Townsville Rising Star winner, Adam McDonald on 34 votes. Late starter Tyson McNeil came in third with 27 votes.
The award comes one week to the day of Wescombe winning the Leagues Runner Up Best & Fairest award along with selection in the AFL Townsville 2009 All Star Team.
The accolades are just rewards for Wescombe who has had an outstanding season for the Swans. A member of a formidable midfield he won plenty of respect from his peers for his uncompromising brand of footy. Also popular with team mates off the field, Whiskey as he is otherwise known has been well received out at Muldoon Oval since transferring from the Townsville Lions in the off season.
Wescombe must surely also be among those tipped to win the Swans Best & Fairest on September 12th.
Leo Lahey won the Reserve Grade count with 44 votes from ruckman Dylan Bycroft and U17 player David Faulds who both finished with 22 votes.
Lahey had an impressive season in the Reserves. Starting 09 off in the forward line Lahey provided a solid target. However it was his move to the centre after 4 games that saw Lahey become the sides go to player. Lahey impressed senior coach Peter Pyle enough for regular requests to play in the A grade side. Lahey eventually relented and finished the season in the senior side.
Dylan Bycroft did well to poll 22 votes before being promoted to the seniors and it seems as if Big D has stamped himself as the clubs premier ruckman.
Under 17 Player David Faulds stepped up a level to Reserves for a good portion of the first half of the season and made the transition easily. Faulds played mainly in the middle and had a big impact on the field which showed in his votes.
The 22 votes in Reserve grade followed on from Faulds winning the Swans Under 17 Players Player with 27 votes from Max Tink 15 and Joel Sim 14.
The Under 15 award was won by Dominic Stout-Milkens with Aiden Johnson and Jye Drewitt tying for second.
Tim Jaundrell won the Under 13 count with Ryan Longridge finishing second.
It was the first time the club has held Players Player for all grades and it seemed to be a success and is another good step toward bringing all grades together and making the club stronger as a whole.
