The song was sung as loud as the Bear had ever heard it.
The walls vibrated in the change rooms at TIS.
The last time the song was heard from the seniors was 2009.
A win that was important as to where the club is trying to head in 2011.
A small step forward.
Now we know we can win and it’s marvellous how a win can help your confidence.
Even Youngy had a smile, but knowing him we will all be brought back to earth quick smart and so we should.
What was the Bear’s proudest moment?
When the seniors ran out onto the ground.
Why?
Let’s go back eight years to 2003 The senior sides for Curra Swans was made up of a huge majority of Army boys. This was absolutely essential or there would be no Swans. We had no juniors.
Every season the Swans lost senior players to army commitments.
In the meanwhile a small junior club, Alligator Creek trained on Muldoon Oval. Alligator Creek juniors when they became seniors were starting to play for other clubs.
Bob Hillier was president of the junior club and was approached by Foxy to consider merging with Curra Swans. Bob had already discussed this very thing with the junior committee and had received a luke warm response. Both men agreed to attend each others meetings and work hard to accomplish what was seen by them as the only road for both club’s survival.
Some of the meetings that followed were the hottest that Bob had ever attended.
Finally it was agreed and so Curra Swans became a complete football club.
Curra Swans is now one of three clubs who continuously fields every age group.
Today as the Swans ran out onto the ground the Bear counted 14 senior players in the side who were current or ex junior players, some from the Alligator Creek days.
Did that bring a tear to the old Bear’s eyes? You bet it did.
Blended with the youth was some very good footballers and with absolutely no disrespect to the army boys intended ( who wouldn’t have Doyly in their side?) and who are still an essential part of our club it was a pleasure to see.
The Bear hasn’t much to say on the game. Any of our supporters and Ressies who didn’t attend missed out on our break through win. Now on to next week.
Believe you can win!
