The Curra Swans came from 4 goals down at quarter time to
notch a 9 point win over neighbours Hermit Park at Neil French Oval
last Saturday.
It was the Swans first successive victories of the Tigers in
many years.
Trailing by 4 goals at the first break the Swans slammed
home 7 goals in the second term to go to the main break 2 goals in front.
The Tigers fought back in the third kicking 5.4 to the Swans
4.1 to trail by 3 points at the final break and set up a classic finish.
Both sides gave it everything in the last quarter and it seemed
as if it would take something special to separate the two neighbours.
That something was to come from Swans midfielder Nathan
Wescombe. The Tigers had the ball and were moving forward when Wescombe decided
to take matters into his own hands. Wescombe smothered a Tiger kick, the ball
ended in Tiger hands again and Wescombe followed through and smothered again,
the ball spilt free and another Tiger swooped on the ball. Wecombe wasn’t going
to let him get away either and duly chased his opponent down and tackled him to
the ground. In the space of 30 seconds Wescombe laid 2 smothers and a tackle to
win his side possession of the football.
Swans coach Peter Pyle rated it as one of the most
inspirational passages of play he had seen and is sure it lifted his team to an
inspiring win against the defending premiers on their turf.
Liam Gordon, Nathan Wescombe, Co captains Jason Drew and Brent Doyle and 5 goal full forward Carl Ward
were among the Swans best on the day.
