B Reserve Netball went into round 5 with a slightly new look team, welcoming Kerry for her South Yarra debut. In an extremely tight battle, the Yarras struggled initially to bring the ball out of defence and down the court to capitalise on Heatherton's mistakes. This allowed Heatherton a slight lead into the half time break. Determined to fight back, the Yarra's held their ground in an extremely physical battle, but unfortunately it just wasn't meant to be today. Despite losing by 1 goal, the lionesses can hold their heads high for the effort they put in against a rough competitor. Bianca was best on court with a strong defence, providing contested play and having countless intercepts and deflections. SYFNC 16 v Heatherton 17.
B Grade Netball welcomed Laura for her first game and Kristal back from injury. The girls took a while to settle into their positions but when they did they showed a strong defensive effort. Unfortunately, the shooters for Dingley were immune to this effort and the Yarras went down 28 to 35. In a big day for acting captain, Zaita, was named best on court for her multiple intercepts in the centre court. Dingley red won; 28 to 35.
A Reserve Netball took on Dingley in an exciting match. The Yarras battled hard and at half time were down by 5 goals. Debutant, Luce Renshaw defended well with her defensive partner, Jules putting in consistent effort all game. The mid-court of Gemma, Sarah, Kat and Jess moved the ball well and our hard working shooters Carrie and Steph, kept a level head all game. Our GA, Carrie, drove hard, out played her opponent and copped a few decent knocks along the way which earnt her a well-deserved best on court. The girls clawed their way back in the 2nd half, to come away with a nail biting draw. 26 all.
A Grade this week faced top of the ladder, Heatherton. Their skill and technique was incredible, showcasing an impressive display of netball. It was great to watch....but not as great to play against!! Nevertheless, South Yarra had a strong opening quarter, and continued to give it their best the whole game. A big thank you to Katrina Logue, who unexpectedly had to take the court, and played a tight game of defence. Best on court this week went to Sarah Hogan for her defence on a brilliant shooter, and keeping spirits up on court. Heatherton 51 South Yarra 22.
History and the bookmakers were firmly against the Thirds when they took on Dingley. Not only had the Yarras never previously registered a victory against Dingley, but media scrutiny was rife during the week that the Thirds would not be able to pull together 22 players. Coach, Dallas was his usual, bullish self when he remarked "history counts for nothing..." during the week, invoking shades of the Socceroo's 2006 World Cup Campaign. It was a highly competitive and entertaining, see-sawing match for the first three quarters. Every time Dingley challenged, the Yarras had the answers. James Evans at one point ran from full-back to half-forward before kicking a miraculous goal. The game was finally broken open in the last quarter by Jakey "Stringer" Bertone, who snagged three classy goals in a seven goal last quarter rout. Alby Evans was his destructive best and so were plenty of his team mates, in what was a famous win for the Thirds. They'll be full of confidence going into the toughest road-trip of the Thirds’ competition, Cerberus away, although, one gets the feeling that this team is undaunted by any challenge moving forward.
Prior to round 5, the Magpies had been dominating the Reserve Grade, winning every match by an average of 114 points and were strung up high on top of the ladder with a massive 596% whilst the Yarras sat fourth on 4-1 with a modest 193%. After the worst warm up in history, the Yarras sprung out of the box kicking four goals and two points in the opening term. It was the last time the Yarras would be inaccurate for the game, as they kicked the last seven goals straight. The ball found the end of Bird's massive legs on many occasions throughout the day including kicking three goals. Mario clunked everything at the top of the goal square, despite being bear hugged all day by his opponent and kicked three goals in his best match for the Yarras thus far. Buckets kicked two goals from set shots. Belfrage's agility was far too good in the ruck which allowed him to set up his midfielders in the perfect position. Fitzpatrick was like a liquidator, clearing everything. Costello and Presland were reliable in the backline, keeping their opponents quieter than a mime. The Magpies threw everything at the Yarras but coach Tuck had more answers than Jeeves. The Yarras won by four points.
The seniors faced the undefeated ladder leaders, Ashwood on Saturday knowing that they needed to bounce back after a disappointing loss the week before. The game was very evenly balanced for the first 3 and a half quarters, the defence was back to their best despite losing Smith to a nasty head knock. The midfield and forward line both functioned well. Ashwood had too much left in the tank in the final quarter and ran away with the win, the final margin didn’t reflect that it was a great match. The Yarras lost by 41 points.
Don't forget the big $2k draw on 28th May 2017!!! See Jamie Ardern or COB for your tickets.
Our condolences and thoughts with the Kealy family, after the passing of Kevin Kealy, the father of the Yarras’ current statistician and former secretary, Mr. Craig Kealy.
