B Reserve Netball took on Lyndale in windy conditions. At the end of the first quarter the scores were even, but as the game went on the Yarras struggled to keep possession, allowing Lyndale to get countless intercepts. Whilst the opposition made many mistakes the Yarras couldn't capitalise on them. Telfer was awarded best on court for working tirelessly to get the ball out of the defensive end and down the court into the Goalers’ hands. Lyndale 25 to South Yarra 17.
B Grade Netball had a narrow loss to Clayton this week. The girls came out of the blocks hard, and were leading at the half-time and three-quarter-time breaks. The Yarras’ patience through the centre court and into the Goalers meant the Yarras were able to keep control of the game and allowed us to capitalise on Clayton's errors. The Goalers made use of the space. Hannah's tireless work under the ring and awesome body positioning earned her best on court. Mary and Cob had great hands in defence, collecting intercepts and stray balls. Unfortunately Cob suffered an ankle injury due to a spectacular fall in the last quarter. We wish the Dutches of Defence a speedy recovery. Final score 24 to Clayton 28.
A Reserve Netballers faced a tough opponent on Saturday. The Yarras came out of the blocks well in the first quarter sticking with Heatherton but struggled to continue the momentum for the following three quarters. The defensive end were a highlight getting their hands on a lot of ball against a tough attacking line up. Thompson did a great job in her first game in A Reserve. Best on court went to the reliable Woiwood, whom proved she really can do anything playing in GD, C and GA all in the one game. With some focus on our attacking combinations the A Reserve Netballers are confident we can bounce back next week with a strong performance. South Yarra 14 were defeated by Heatherton Black 30
A Grade Netball had a point to prove from showed last week’s loss. Renshaw’s long arms and drives out of defence were too much for her opponents. Hogan paired nicely with Renshaw to keep the opposition’s goaling opportunities to a minimum. Riley showcased her amazing core with an unbelievable intercept using the ball to keep her off the ground and still in play. As if the coach needed any more encouragement for abdominal work at training. Price, Beurckner, Becker and O'Dea were too strong, agile and composed for Mordialloc. They nailed every quarter-time goal target set for them. O'Dea proved she's dynamite at either end of the netball court and took home best on court honours! South Yarra 51 defeated Mordialloc, 30.
The Thirds travelled to the naval base to play against the Pussers. The Yarras lost a player early to have just eighteen players against the powerhouse and ladder leaders in the Thirds competition, Cerberus. The three-headed dogs got the jump on our boys Kicking 3-2-20 in the opening term to just one point. Despite being undermanned the Yarras fought back and keeping Cerberus scoreless in the final half. Hill kicked two goals, and Bertone kicked the other goal for the Yarras. The Yarras squandered opportunities in the final quarter. Brothers, Alby and James Evans were the Yarras' better players as their run and carry was great to watch. R. Dore was a worthy mention. The Yarras came close to a last minute win, but fell short 4-5-29 to 3-6-24.
The Reserves met the Cobras at Sandown with a cross wind that favoured the social club rooms making it difficult to hit targets. Fitzpatrick and Lange kicked three goals each in addition to six other individual goal kickers. Zach kicked a goal from 50m on the boundary. Waldron brought his teammates into the game with slick ball movement by both hand and foot. Murphy's tackling pressure was inspirational. Moroney was quicker than the media after Schapelle Corby. The Yarras inaccurate goal kicking and sloppy handball skills limited their win to a modest 49 points.
The Seniors started the match kicking against a stiff breeze after Rusty lost the toss for the first this year. That was the only loss for the day with 22 contributors winning across the ground. The scoreboard didn’t show the Yarras dominance only leading by a couple of goals at quarter-time despite some fantastic link up play. The breeze was taken to its full advantage and goals were being kicked from everywhere. Birdy and Brady both kicked 6 goals. Maher and Russell were excellent in the backline. Keki showed that he loves playing at Sandown. The last quarter was the Yarras best, keeping the opposition goalless and kicking 10 themselves. In the end it was a 174 point win. Next week the Yarras are again at a big ground where our run can be used to its full advantage.
