On Sunday the 15th of April, South Yarras’ new womens football team played their first practice match against Chelsea Heights. Being their first opportunity to put the skills they have been learning in training to the test, naturally the girls were nervous, but nonetheless ready to come together as a team. Excitement for the game started to kick in when the ladies got in the Yarra lions colours and formed their first team huddle before it was kick off time. The first quarter saw Chelsea Heights in the lead with an early goal, but the Yarra’s maintained a strong front and positive mindset for the remainder of the game. Come the second quarter the Yarra’s had well and truly found their feet, and among good disposals and tackles, they managed to square up with Chelsea Heights quickly. The third and final quarter (due to the weather) saw tensions rise between both teams as they found their competitive edge. The Yarras maintained their composure and took out the win. Overall, both teams played exceptionally well and gained a lot of confidence as not only individual sports women, but most importantly as teams. The Yarras have gained momentum since the practice match in their training, and are excited to see what the rest of the season brings.
