Thank you to everyone who helped to organise and facilitate a fantastic ‘Race Day’ on Saturday night. Stay tuned to hear about the next event.
The C Res girls took on Dingley this week. With only three girls from the team able to play we weren’t sure that we would be able to field a team this week, nearly giving Bron and Jess a collective heart attack. Thanks our lovely fill-ins we were able to take the court. Welcoming back Bianca and Stephanie in their Yarras dresses, and introducing Tahlia and Elise to the team, the girls took on the day with gusto and gratitude to be playing at all! Even though this group hadn’t played together before, we seemed to click pretty well. Just like Jared and Keira, it was crazy but it worked. We were strong from end to end, intercepting Dingley’s passes all over the court. Steph’s bullet passes into the ring helped Han Bev and Jules out in a huge way. Julie’s tireless movement around the ring and accurate shooting earned her Best On, special thanks to Mad and Mary for helping us bring it home in the last quarter. South Yarra 53 to Dingley 11.
This week C grade took on top of the table Oakleigh Districts. It was clear from the start that the Yarra’s were going to have a hard day at the office. We did however manage to have some small wins throughout the game. We set goals each quarter to beat the last quarters score and we were able to reach these goals each time. As a captain I was very proud of how the team kept their heads up and kept trying the whole time despite the score line. Mad Thompson was awarded best on ground for efforts in feeding the goalers, especially the reverse swing bounce passes into the circle. On a completely different note I would like to announce Bunnings as my player sponsor, they are now covering all my sandpaper needs. A huge thankyou to Laura Carrol and Laura Jeffery for your support from the sideline it was much appreciated. The final score was Oakleigh 55 Yarras 26.
B grade Lionesses ramped the intensity up this week, ferociously determined to secure their first win. Blackrock put up a courageous fight but were unable to stop the flow the Yarras created down the court. Meg Howlett and Kate Shevlin were awarded best on for their outstanding efforts. The Yarras 40 defeated Blackrock 29.
A Grade continued their good form, adding another win on Saturday. Sarah was able to shut Keysborough’s drives in their attacking third until an unfortunate ankle injury late in the game. Bron took her place and steadied the Yarras to hold off a Keysborough comeback. Meg was awarded best on court for her accurate shooting and clever ball movement down the court. South Yarra 40 def Keysborough 34.
After a false start last week, the Women’s footballers were all rearing to go, to get out on the field and show everyone just how far we have come through training, bonding and practice matches. Starting with a field of 13 – luckily matched by the other team - we were not going to let the fact that Doveton had a substantial bench deter us from running our hardest and playing our best. The first quarter started off superbly with Yarras scoring a quick goal kicked by Cait and showcasing some excellent teamwork by all. At quarter time, Yarras were up 7 points and successfully stopped Doveton from scoring at all. We began the second quarter strong, scoring 2 quick goals by Caity and Jess. This was matched by Doveton and we went into half time even, 3-1 apiece. After a quick change in tactics, and the arrival of Bianca, we now had 14 players and did a fantastic job in both the forward and the back lines. Jess ran onto the ball to score our fourth and final goal. Our luck took a turn for worse when just prior to three quarter time, Cait received a blasting tackle, injuring her ankle. It was then that we all realised how fortunate we are to have a physio in the team as Ammo took charge of the situation. We were 1 point up going into the final quarter of the game. The final quarter saw us walking out onto the field with one player down. Much of the play was conducted in our back line and it was good to see the extra support our team provided to the defensive players. Added defensive pressure from Esther and co. resulted in Doveton scoring 4 points with only 1 goal this quarter. After another injury to our team, copped by new recruit Lilly, the remaining of the team fought it out to the end, being defeated by only 8 points. Overall, each and every player played extremely well and as a team we are more motivated than ever.
The Thirds again relied on a few new and faces to get a team on the park this week. However, the much changed team started well and never looked back against a Dingley side that had started the season in the same fashion. After Matthew "Cuddles" Patullock slotted the first from the boundary the Yarras never surrendered the lead that was capped off in keeping the opposition pointless in the third term. Zach Hardie stepped up with voice and attack on the footy. Final score; Yarras 11.14 80 Dingley 6.8 44.
The Reserves won the toss. May took many defensive marks and it seems that it is his month. Those were the only highlights in a very poor loss by the Yarras where they couldn’t even muster a goal.
Another tough day for the Seniors with few highlights after halftime except for Brodie's efforts in his senior debut and Tom Rogers slotting one after a 50m penalty. Ashwood were too good, Eamon and Scott were again our best.
