Plenty of wins for the Yarras for the first game of winter.
Thank you to all of our past players that came down to the Den and supported the Yarras for Round 6.
Our next function is Ladies Day on 30th June.
C Reserve Netball played against Springvale District Blue and stepped out on the court with two goals in mind. 1, to continue the winning streak and 2, to walk away with NO injuries. With broken arms and sprained ankles plaguing the side over the last couple of weeks I am pleased to report the girls walked away in full health. It’s true, miracles do happen. Laura Rose and Charly Abbott put on a clinic in defence. Laura’s arms and incredible holds were a dream for us to watch but an absolute nightmare for Springvale’s shooters. Han and Jules remained cool and calm under pressure against the tough Springvale defence, and the ball was moving effortlessly through the mid by this week’s best on Kerry Spencer. Turnovers were the hot topic of conversation this week with countless conversions going our way thanks to Roms, Alex, Laura, Charly and Kez. South Yarra took the win; 52 to 21, yew. Next round C Reserve take on 2nd on the ladder, Heatherton, in what is sure to be an epic battle.
C Grade played against 5th placed Keysborough. We started well, with combinations flowing as the ball was moved down the court. Molly O’Bryan was on fire, threading the needle into the circle multiple times. The combination of Jess Zach and Emily Bacon built as the game progressed. The Yarras were even at half time but unfortunately had a shocking 3rd quarter and entered the last quarter 8 goals down. In a decision as dubious as Barnaby Joyce excepting money for an interview, Keysborough switched off in the 4th quarter and thought that they had the game in the bag, with the Yarras putting their foot down and bringing it back to a difference of 3 goals. Best on Court was Lily Rae for an outstanding effort in defence for the full 4 quarters. C grade have had some very close losses of late and should be commended on the fact that this week we pushed hard for the whole game and most importantly we got another turn over from pushing left! Finally score Keysborough 34 to Yarras 31.
A Grade came out firing in the first quarter, spurred on by the adrenaline rush from trying to find a car park before the game. Unfortunately some rushed passes and poor decision making the under pressure allowed Dingley Gold to run away with it in the 2nd and 3rd quarters with an 8 goal lead by three-quarter time. The Yarras picked up their form in the last quarter getting back to within 4 goals but weren’t able to pull it back by the end. Lucy and Laura continued their outstanding form being named joint Best on Court. South Yarra 29 were defeated by Dingley Gold 35.
The Womens football enjoyed their inaugural win. After a tight first quarter, the Yarras were able to score an additional goal in the second quarter to put them in the lead by 10 points at the major break. Clayton came out with immense pressure during the third term scoring back-to-back goals inwhich he Yarras responded with a goal to keep them in the lead at three-quarter time. At the start of the fourth quarter, the Yarras were one woman down due to injury but contiued to power through with their intensity at the ball to secure their first win. Lucy Smith and Benita Grimaldi were the Yarras major goal kickers with two goals each. Haley and Hollingsworth each kicked a goal. Boys was one of the Yarras better players. Good luck to the Yarras when they face Frankston at this weekend's big VFL curtain raiser in Sandringham.
A great day of Veterans Football with 2 wins for the Yarras. The over 45s had their first win of the year in style, winning by 62 points over Werribee. Better players were Vinny O'Brien, JA and ‘Jumping’ Johnny Harding. The Over 35s continued on their winning ways beating an undermanned Waverley 172 to just a point. It was a great team effort with 10 different goal kickers including ‘Ladders’ kicking 7 goals. The Yarras now sit second on the ladder with a percentage of 360. But the season starts now with our next 3 matches played away to the other 3 sides in the top 4 of the ladder. Our next game is against the undefeated top side, Peninsula. The Yarras look forward to the challenge. Thanks for our off-ground help, Jesse McLaren managing the Bench, Stooge carrying the water, Aarland and his brother Goal Umpiring, and Dale Berry doing the Time Keeping.
The Thirds were back home for what was an important game against a St. Pauls side that had been producing some impressive results. Led by fearless leader Puddles (about their fifth fearless leader of the season) they had the best of a tight first quarter, and skipped out to a two goal lead. Four more goals in the second term saw them take a comfortable lead into the main break, although they remained aware of the need to maintain the ascendency they had established after the break. Another impressive defensive effort in the third term saw St. Pauls remain goalless again, with the Yarras taking a five goal lead into the final term. Despite a late run from St. Pauls, this lead combined with two impressive final term goals from Maxy was too much, and the Yarras ran out with another impressive win, consolidating their position near the top of the table.
The Reserves match will be continuously replayed on ‘Footy Flashbacks’ for many years to come as it was one of the greatest matches of all time. The Reserves had been smashed every week excluding their one win prior to this match. The Yarras had twenty-two warriors and not one passenger that would challenge fourth placed, Heatherton. However, there were some standouts; Bazzant was like the Greek God, Ares, a dangerous, overwhelming force that was insatiable in battle. Johnson dominated in both the air and on the ground. His speed and athleticism was far greater than his opponents and left them in his wake. The Englishman, Stuart ‘The Difference’ Barnes took a strong contested mark and kicked a goal in his debut match. The Twin Towers, Malone & Hardie controlled the forward line which created issues for Heatherton’s coaching staff. Hardie kicked two whilst Malone kicked one. But the pair also created many other scoring options. The Yarras team effort showed as they had seven different goal scorers and weren’t reliant upon one individual. Gardy was once again brilliant in the ruck. With just seconds remaining on the clock, Lay marked the ball +50 metres from goal and went back to have a set shot. The Yarras were down by four points and had been behind all day. A point would not be enough. Lay was as cool as his personality. He kicked it long enough and straight enough to put the Yarras in front by two points. Shortly after, the siren sounded and the crys of joy resonated around the ground. Coach Tidmarsh celebrated like Ron Barrassi immediately after the 1970 VFL Grand Final.
The Seniors played a great game but unfortunately went down by 3 points. It was a tight tussle all day, Heatherton had the better of us in the air in the first half but after some pointers from the coach the boys were back to their spoiling best. The game was there to be won in the final quarter with the ball stuck in the Yarras’ forward half, the team pressed and pressed with great pressure that should see the team take confidence in to the remainder of the season. Some wayward shots at goal cost us in the end. 1.8 to 0.1 in the last was the story of the day. The lads left the field feeling very flat. It was certainly one that got away.
